Removing humbroll paint?

I don"t know if it has been asked before, but can someone give me an EAZY way to remove the old humbrol paint from a 1/48 JAS grippen without submerging the whole thing?

I basically just want to give it a face lift with new airbrushed collours.

There is no easy way. I have read that a good coating of an oven cleaner works. Apply cleaner then leave model in a sealed box for a couple of hours. That should soften most of the paint which should be removable with a toothbrush or similar. I've never tried this,read it on a forum (maybe here!) a while ago.

Oven cleaners are nasty alkaline things so I'd recommend a pair of gloves at least.

Carsons paint killer- takes every paint I know of down to the plastic. HAs been testet on ten year old paint.

For a 'facelift' why not just give it a rub down with fine steel wool and then re-spray?

I have used the oven cleaner method and have had fairly good results. I,m not sure about Humbrol, but it does remove Revell, and also Tamiya acrylics. I have also used a thing called model strip, it is a paste that you apply then seal the object in a plastic bag (I leave overnight) and that works.

The only paint I have not been able to remove yet is Vallejo, once they are dry they are there to stay (I think).

Well, maybe the sanding down idea might work.I might loose a few pannel lines, but could re-scribe them.

Why fine steel wool? How much of a "cut" does it have vs. something like 800 or 1000 wet paper?

All of the other chemical stuff you lads are talking about I suspect might not be redly availabe in SA eccept the oven cleaner.

No real reason, I just thought steel wool would smooth the paint surface enough to get rid of any brush marks without actually cutting into the model and hitting the plastic yet give a good 'key' for the spray.

The fact that you are on here suggests that you have internet, why not buy it on line? I assume that you are Afrikanas so I guess that you can find your way around dutch, german and maybe danish web shops, not forgetting the english ones!

Yes I can do so I supose, maybe some Flemish/dutch defenately no German and a little English. LOL

I will first try the steelwool trick, There is quite a bit of putty filler on the plane and I am only now starting to wonder if any solvent will damage that aswell???

I think highly of most people! Nå I am an English ex-pat living in Denmark. Danish is not a language you hear a lot of and is hard to learn. The point being... I have since discovered that there are lots of likenesses with German and Dutch. South Africa being an old dutch settlement Afrikanas is based on dutch with a bit of German mixed in. ( I'm making this up you know).

The real point is that for the purpose of internet shopping I can find my way around in a lot of sites that have a germanic language. give it a try..

Failing that I can send you a bottle if all else fails!

Yes Afrikaans is a form or Dutch with a little German and english in it. But these days the SA goverment wants is mostly English, as they are trying extremely hard to get rid of Afrikaans as it is still seen as the language of the "opressor".

Pitty really, it will get allot harder to be able to have my 2 kids educated in Afrikaans (supposedly a right in our constitution)and they will have to be educated in english as a second language :-(

Ah well enough moaning for one night!

I will let you guys know how the "re-vamp" of the grippen is going.
