how/where do you display your models?

    silly enough question, huh?

i only recently started modeling as a hobby again, and already have a few assorted models laying around. i prefer wood sailing ships and ww2 aircraft, but my wife has also gotten me odds and ends like "middle ages farmhouse" (?!) and misc cavalry figurines which are quikie timekillers.

i figured i can make dioramas of those things, but in the end, i still have a hodgepodge of models and nowhere to keep them all! (i have toddlers to boot, who would love to see if the planes really fly)

what are you all doing? cabinets? shelves? hanging planes from wires? i'm afraid i'll wind up sticking to small models just to solve storage/display issues.

    Hi Louelio

Here's a pic of a wall hung cabinet I've got in my den. There's obviously a few unfinished projects in there too! I've seen some nice floor standing cabinets too, I may invest in one of these as space is becoming an issue. Dioramas are obviously a bit more tricky to store - shelves would seem the way forward here (size allowing) got mine on my office desk at the mo - not ideal.

This is a good question though and, I suspect, often overlooked (myself included). Personally I think a cabinet is worth the investment to store objects which, after all, you have spent a serious amount of your time and money on. Some of the other guys may have more suggestions though.

I don't know if this is really answering your question but I'm keeping an eye on this thread to see if anyone has any brilliant ideas!!!

    Cheers

    Paul

Hi Louelio. Firstly a warm welcome to the forum. I think the only way forward for you is as Paul has done above, cabinets high up on the wall and out of harms way.

Models are as you know delicate, and with young children, no matter how well behaved, children will find a way to break your hard work.

I am lucky enough to have a purpose built shed where i do all my model making and that is where they stay once built. Sorry, but i cant see much in the way of a solutin for you other than whats been stated. Regards Martin :-)

I have some in the study in a cabinet, mostly the armour and the like. (the misses dont thing they are the most atractive things to have in the living room.

In the Dinning room I have an other cabinet with boats in. Upstairs, in the living room I have two glass display cases (from a shop I think) with my fast growing collection of aircraft.

Oh and the desk in the study is strewn with unfinished stuff. No kids in the house (other than me that is) but I do have a rather curious cat who is thankfully very carfull where she walks.

Not a lot of help, but thats how I get around the problem.

I'm not sure this will help but I have seen pics of larger aircraft models hanging against the wall rather than from the ceiling. You could either use some kind of cord/wire fixed to the tail of the aircraft so it hangs vertically downwards. Or perhaps have a u-shaped bracket to slot the wing edges into. If they're high enough it should keep them out of the kids' way.

No kids in my house, grand kids now and then!

I have found in the past no matter how careful I was , my models on display always got some bit or other broken off, especially 'dusting'....I don't care how clean a dwelling is, dust and titchy spiders (not kids) are the enemy, even in a cabinet!

I have long given up displaying stuff, if a conversation gets around to models I will bring them out or I might just want to 'play' with them myself!!!

Storage solution for me is: Military Vehicles in those plastic 2ltr. ice cream tubs with the snap on lids, with contents marked on the lid, spider proof! Figures and smaller items in clear Ferrero Rocher boxes 'cos you can see inside without taking the lid off! If your wife doesn't spoil you with FR's then the small, see through plastic containers with lids from the Deli are just as good.

Not much help for larger stuff though!

O.K. they are not on permenant display but they will remain safe, clean and easy to store away in any available space.

That's how I store things, I hope it helps.

            Cheers,

            Ron

wow.. some nice cabinets there... i think i definitely want a cabinet to keep the dust away... maybe i'll build one. i have a large garage and build some sort of piece of furniture every year (i try to use as much scrap as i can get... even saving the trunks of our last 3 xmas trees). i built my modeling table from a nice piece of oak plywood (4'x6'), but admittedly got lazy and used stair balusters for legs in my rush to get the modeling started... resulting in a pretty (yet slightly rickety) table. we call it the fawn table cause of its delicate legs...lol i might just take over the kids basement play are thats adjacent to my computer and modeling desks... they can have the rest of the house!

                  Hey guys.

I collect model battleships and aircraft, and since i collect 1:72 scale, they get quite large.

One way to solve your problems is to put them on a high shelf, where they can be seen but not reached.

However, when I ran out of space, I started hanging them from the cieling. its a simple enough concept and itll keep them safe, just make sure the wire holding them is stron enough (mine wasnt).

                  good luck.

Thanks for the tip about the Ikea cabinet Allyne. Took our lives into our own hands yesterday and headed of to Milton Keynes Ikea, Sat Naff has no idea where it is and dumps you in the countryside if you use Ikea postcode and every time we go, they have moved it so we end up driving round waiting to get a visual...... Anyway, got one and they are great for the money.

I use one of these. It's worth getting the optional light as well.
