    Doodlebug plans?

    Hi all.

Where can I get a 1/72 kit of a V-1 doodlebug or maybe plans/3-views to scrathbnuild one?

I have a cool idea for a mini flying diorama.

    Thanx

Thanx mate, will keep an eye open.

I founs some very basic V-1 3 views and think it might be not to difficult to scrachbuild from carved balsa ans filler!

The airfix one is readily available over here theuns, dont know how easy it is to get hold of in SA but it seems to be perfect for your needs. What have you got planned ? cheers tony

Certainly not a complex shape but it does need to be right. Sadly I did not take anymore pictures of this one. Might be worth doing a few trials with Plasticine to get the shape and proportions right then transfer to carving balsa.

Frog and Novo did a 1/72 scale with spitfire and Italeri did a HE111 with V1. I have a few 3 views somewhere in my info stash on V1/Fi103s.

            Tony.

              Thanx for the replies.

I got this very basic 3 view to work from.

I am thinking of a 1/72 Typhoon or spit with it's wing unred the V1's wing as per the famous shadow photo of a spit tipping the V1 over after the ammo was spent.

Should make for an interesting "flight" diorama.

                V1 images

                Theuns

If you need images, there's a V1 at the Manston Musem 5 minutes from where I live.

Let me know what you want and consider it done.

Hi thanx for the offer Peter!

don't go to any special trouble soon, I will only be doing this thing is a month or so, as soon as I get the Typhoon or spit kit.

Any pix that you as a modler would want to build one of these things would be great.

Interestingly I was watching an episode of Gladiator of WWII last night on the Battle of Britain. The pilot, cannot remember his hame, who allegedly discovered the wing to wing tipping of the Vi described in detail how it was done. He said that they would fly alongside the V1 with his aircraft wing just under the wing of the V1. The turbulence traveling over the aircraft wing destabilised the wing of the V1 up to the point where the onboard gyros could no longer control it and it would lose control and fall. He did not say that there was any contact at all between the two wings as I have always been lead to believe

graham , you are right on both counts, sometimes there was contact as in the case of f.o. dean in his meteor mk1 , who was hailed a hero for destroying a v1 and also given a rollicking for damaging the meteors wingtip ! A more detailed account is on my thread in the aircraft pics sect. page5 "meteor mk1 vs V1" cheers tony

You are correct Graham, the wings wasn't supose to contact (although in some cases they did)

I read that a mustang pilot also tried to do the same but was unsuccesfull as the barage ballons were coming colser at an alarming rate.

As I understand the most of the V1 "kills" were by Typhoons rather than the spits as one would think.

The only kits I see I will easly get here are the Academy or the Airfix ones. I hope Academy provides a pilot figure, for some or other reason they rarely do in their kits , otherwize I will get the Arifix one.

hi theuns , yes the typhoons were a lot more successful than spitfires due to the higher top speed, if youre wanting the academy kit then youll probably have to get a pilot elsewhere- like you say they rarely put one in.Id say the academy would be a better bet than the ancient airfix tooling though! cheers tony

Yes , it seems you are correct Tony.

Pitty about the lack of a pilot though :-(

An interesting thing about these wing "tip over" tecnique is that aerodynamicly it shouldn't work as advertized. If the plane's wing was put under the V1's wing to tip it over, it would tip towards the plane as the upper surface ov the wing is in low presure and the V1's under wing is relatvely nutral or slightly high presure. Thus the V1 would roll towards the plane....never a good idea. Same with the wing above the V1's wing.Makes you think hey..............

I have made the fuselarge and engine to shape and am just sealing now to get a nice smooth surface, although I don't think they were in prestine condition to start with.

I just took a 12mm pine dowl that O clamped in a drill and formed it against a belt sander to get a nice semetric shape, eazy peazy !

Need to make the wings and tail later.

What collour were these things? I assume a standard green with light blue/green undersides? and no markings ?
