Tamiya or Hasagawa ME 109e???

Hi All. I was looking to get a 1/48 Me 109E for a BOB build and can get either a Hasagawa or Tamiya 109 for a very good price ,actually the only reason that I would buy a "name brand" model.

Wich one do you lads sugest?

I had a look at my recently acuired (50% of normal price!) Tamiya Me 262 and am extremely happy with the level of detail, all I can say is WOW! There is no need for after market cockpit, every detail is superb.

If you aren't going to be buying after market stuff for it then i would stick with the Tamiya. Lovely model to go together and looks great.

I recently bought the airfix version which is a new moulding and i must admit for the price i paid off of ebay (£12.75) it is a really good kit. Well worth a look.I also think Fenlander did a review about the kit a few weeks ago.

I've built both of the above and I think I actually prefer the Hasagawa kit. A real difference I found was when comparing the tail wheels - the Hasagawa kit has a much bigger tail wheel than the Tamiya. I have no idea which is more correct. The other major differences are Tamiya has a pilot, Hasagawa not; Hasagawa has a small etch fret for finer parts (like the armour behind the head rest) and the Tamiya is all plastic. Both went together well, the panel lines are more pronounced on the Tamiya but for me the Hasagawa is more subtle and just looks right. It is close though - they're both good kits.

One word TAMIYA......A beautiful model to build, good detail, and fits together like a dream.

Having built the Tamiya kit, it went together very nicely I don't think you'll be disspleased, as for cockpit detail you'll not be needing any third party extras.

Steve, you know, that pix just gave me an idea for a nice little diorama.If I can get a german ground crew member in that pose :-)

I will get the kit from the same guy I bought the 262 from, he sells it for 1/2 price than in the shops. Either the shops have a killer mark up or these kits "fell off the back of a truck" LOL!

Just to confirm, the 109 E model was used for the BOB ?

Most definitely various Es. The dash numbers (sub types)vary, I've got a list as of August 1940 but can I find it? Can I hell. The Bf109F didn't arrive until early 1941,long after what the British call the Battle of Britain. The German's roll the Channel battles,Battle of Britain,and the RAF's early efforts accross the channel into one long campaign which makes the numbers look a lot better for the Luftwaffe!

Hopefully I will get the 109 this week and give you the decal no to have a look at.

I hope the 109 will be a slightly less complicated model than the 262 and will use it as a stepping stone.I had a look at my 109 books and the early collours I think would look nice is the pale blueundersides that come up to just below the canopy line and there seems to be a sharp demarcation line then up to the splinter cammo on the wings and upper fuse. The fin and rudder is also pale blue.

You would not perhaps have the RLM codes for the most common sky blue,green and dark green aswell as the cockpit collours please?

Hi Theuns, The standard upper colours were RLM02 and RLM71. The underside colour was RLM65.

The cockpit would probably have been RLM02 but there is a slim chance it may have been,even this early,RLM66. There's a less slim chance that it would be RLM02 but with the area above the level of the cockpit sill and behind the pilot darker,probably RLM66. Without a photo of your aircraft go 02 or 02/66.

I buy my kits roughly 50/50 at a local shop and online. If I am in the shop I tend to look at the copyright date on the box and go for the newest. Tamiya and Hasegawa are obviously both quality brands, but the recent new Hasegawa's take some beating. Cheers Derek

Derek. Some of the Revell kits are in fact Hasegawa kits reboxed. I've just picked up the 1/32 Revell Bf 109 k-4 for £15 and it's a Hasegawa kit originally but just different decals. Just opened the box today and it looks great.

Have to say that the Revel Spitfire MkIX (I think) that I did was a re boxed Hasegawa and it was just beautiful to build, from what I have seen (in pictures only to be fair) it is better detailed than the Tamiya.
