    Airfix Sturmovik 1:72 (AO2013)

I went into a model shop today to buy a board for making a balsa/tissue plane and couldn't resist buying a cheapy plastic kit. I bought the one in the thread title and when I opened the box I couldn't believe how bad the model is. Flash everywhere, bad fitting, feeble prop (all bent), horrible feel to the plastic. I quickly slung the fuselage together and added wings and it will now be a test hack for my painting. That's 2 Airfix kits I've bought, doubt I'll buy another. I don't see the point when there are better made kits out there.

    Hugely disappointed.

The older Airfix kits simply can't compete with modern injection moulding techniques and they don't come much older than this one. The master is probably well past it's best and it isn't worth the costs of retooling for such a minority interest.

In all fairness though I have seen some pretty awful modern kits including resin aftermarket sets so not all modern products are wonderful. I like to think of the old kits as a bit more of a challenge to our modelling skills as well as bringing back fond memories of a time when that was all you could buy. I first made that kit when I was in my teens so it must be close to fourty years old now. This was in the days when a Tamiya 1/12 scale bike cost less than a fiver, over three weeks of paper round money, and was the bees knees as far as I was concerned. Nowadays the old ones of those look a bit weak compared to a modern tooling as well.

Fair points Richard, but things move on. I suppose I should be less "spur-of-the-moment" and more research a model first

I think the main thing that got me, was paying ยฃ5.99 for it. I reckon I can get a fairly good kit for that from say, Revell or Italeri. If I'd paid ยฃ3 I would accept it as expected.
