    Invasion stripes

I think thats what there called, am trying to get some bits and pieces ready for the november non gb, have decided to build a spitfire and after looking at loads of pictures on google i'm stumped, would a b.o.b spit have the black and white stripes on the wings and fuselage. Sorry if its a silly question but i know very little about these aircraft.

    Cheers

No, the invasion stripes came much later. The definitive answer will come when Steve (Stona) gets out of bed lol but I know they would not be on BoB aircraft. Not sure if they were prior to the D-Day operations but as the name implies, they were added to help the AA gunners identify friend or foe during the chaos that comes with invasion. Also, the colour of the camo would be earth and green not grey and green which came after 9bet I get pulled up on that one....)

P.S. No such thing as a silly question on here.

Short reply to that would be no! The stripes where painted on for the D-day party If I am not mistaken.

Spits in that era, could of been green/brown top and White bottom, or black and white bottom. A bit later they got the Sky bottom colour a sort of duck egg greenish not the Sky grey that came after. Then the Green/grey camo put in a show, with a grey bottom, medium sea grey I think. Could also of been light or sky grey.

Hope that has not confussed you even more.

IIRC the invasion stripes were only on the aircraft for about 6 weeks after D-Day. They were applied in such a rush that they are not uniform on all aircraft. So if you painted one a little narrower or thicker than what the instructions say, don't worry about it because in reality it was down to the individual units to add them.

Right, cheers all that answered that one then, so if i've deciphered IanM's post correctly i should be looking at a green/brown top and white bottom? It seems obvious now about the stripes hno:, looking forward to my first gb, bring it on.

Actually the order to aply the marke came only a week or so before the 5 June '44. The entire fleet of aircraft were brush painted in the few days leading up the the 6th June IIRC.
