    RAF airfield display help

    Hi all,

I'm after some help with a display for my typhoon. I am using some railroad grass stuff as a base to use. Just need some help with making it look used and, well war like. Lol.

    Cheers

Kresten try this, get your 'Tiffy' and roll it along the grass to mark the tyre tracks.

Then with a suitable heated thingy the same width as the tyres quickly run this along the tracks. This will stop the 'grass' springing back up again (it's the same method as joining the tracks of tanks together)

You will have to run it along a few times, but it does work. Practice first though!!!

Perhaps a puddle of water or two? Nicely placed to reflect a bit of the aircraft...

Thanks Ron. I'll have to try it. This may sound stupid but how would I make these puddles?

      Cheers

You could either embed a piece of perspex, pour some dolls house water into a slight recess or for shallow water a blob of resin or gloss varnish works OK

Hi mate, would PVA glue work?

I doubt you would get any sort of reflection using PVA alone.

Good suggestions from Richard, out of the three I would use a small piece of perspex and it does give a perfect reflection, and puddles are usually mirror images. Varnish, although I have used it, doesn't give that clear image. I use this to simulate depth rather than detail.

Perspex would show parts of your aircraft off a treat.

Again Kresten, have a play with different effects until you find one that suits your purpose.

            Good luck,

            Ron

I would start buy giving the whole of the base a layer of plaster or similar, mix a bit of earth colour in it for good measure. BEFORE it dries hard run some wheels through it to make a few ruts and push fingers, thumbs and other parts of your hand to make shallow dents in various shapes and sizes. Once dried and hardened, paint with PVA (this can also be coloured) and sprinkle the 'grass' on. I find it best to buy a couple of packs in different tones and do different areas in the two colours and then mix some together for others. Dont forget to leave some of the deeper ruts free from grass. This will get the effect that the grass has been squished into the mud and muck. Some of the deeper puddles could be muddy to.

As far as standing water goes I dont think you can beat the stuff that Vallejo sell. Self levelling, can be toned to any colour too. Then its just a case of pour it into the parts you want as puddles. Pour is slowly to avoid bubbles, although they can be removed with a thin pointed brush or the like. Make sure the base is level and leave to dry.

Hope you could make sense of that.

Thanks guys. I will have to make a few practice ones when i get the time using your way Ian. Sounds good. I have already put the grass down for this one though. Quick question, does this look like mud?

                Cheers

                      Hi guys,

Well the base is done, i think. Dont wanna try change to much if i can help it. Have made it muddy and shown where the wheels have come throught the mud. Any help/advice appreciated. I think it is an improvement over the first 1 i did.

                      Cheers

                          Great improvement Kresten.

As you have asked for advise Blue, I have looked at your picture and noticed summat you might like to consider....

Where the tyre tracks meet the mud at the top of the picture how about a bit of 'squelch' where the wheels would have run across the soft mud?

Small addition, but I reckon it might help what is already a very nice base.

                              Hi,

Try this now Ron. Ive added 'squelch' marks and i also made the tracks look a bit more muddy. It is still wet so may look a bit bright

                              Cheers
