Roden 1/48 scale S.E. 5a.....

Been amusing my self building this little gem over the last few days. This evening I triumphantly placed it on the desk... Finished!

Wrong, I just noticed that I am short six wires in the rigging! Oh Bugger! They will now be joining the rest of the rigging tomorrow!

For others contemplating this kit, in this scale; I warn you now its Tiny.

I'll bung a few photos up when its done, quite frankly after four hours of rigging my head hurts and I'm going to bed....

Hi Ian, would you be so kind as to explain how you go about doing the rigging please? I have sofar refrained from doing bibes as I can't do such fine rigging.

Andy; There is a great web site that has an S.E.5a that they have built from the ground up. Yes a real full size flying one. OK it it a repro, and there are a couple of things that are maybe not 100%. I would imagin that the CAA have some say in these things.

For an example I could mention that on their plane they have used flat stainless steel stays and not the more correct wires. It gives a great walk around with very good large and clear photos.

I thought it was well scary too but once you have done the first wire, its quite simple. Once you have figured out a way to do it....

That site is excellent and really well designed. Have you seen the pic in the reference section of the crashed Fokker VII? It's amusingly titled 'The Only Tree for Miles' - made me smile anyway.

I don't know if we are talking about the same thing here, but during a bit of research for a 1:48 sopwith camel, I read that British aircraft didn't use wires, but indeed a type of flat bar for rigging. This flat bar had razor edges - a bit tricky for the ground crew !

Hey Ian, i purchased a way way back issue of a magazine, Scale Model Builder it think, it had a full section of the SE5a in it, so i got it for when i build my 1/4 scale one. Ill dig it out and have a look at it for you. see what i can find.

Good site theaerodrome, Sniffed around on it once in a while, Might sign up on day....

I think we can all rest easy and sleep well knowing that they did indeed use flat wire bracing 'wire' on the SE 5a.

I will try to get it right on the next one!!
