I'm affraid pre-shading is really best done with an airbrush. I onced tried using a marker pen to highlight the lines - what a mess, don't do it. However, the good thing about pre-shading is that it doesn't have to be accurate, you're trying to creat a variation in the top coat, so if the pre-shade is a bit off line, it's ok.

Most use black for pre-shading, but really any complementary colour will do. I've just used brown, under sky (beige) which came out quite well.

I've used humbrol filler and thought it was ok, the trick might be to put it on thin. It's better to do a couple thin 'fills' rather than one big thick line of filler. Also for wing roots (any gap really) use masking tape either side of the joint. This keeps the amount of filler used to a minimum and easier to sand down.

    Hope this helps
