I occurs to me that your friend maybe getting confused with the Bf 108. There were two on the British register in September 1939 and a third was acquired from the German Embassy after it was "abandoned" by the staff. I've read of a fourth example but I think this may be a figment of someone's confusion rather than a real aeroplane

Here's one serving with 24 Squadron, resplendent in RAF markings. It was called an "Aldon" rather than "Taifun" by us,which seems a shame!

It's a handsome machine and had very good performance for its time.

    Cheers

    Steve

Heres my guess after a bit of internet research, is it a de havilland dragonfly? According to wikipedia (not always accurate I know!!!!) It was introduced in 1936, and was in operation I think with the silver city airline till 1960!!!!

      Cheers, Andrew

Hey Steve, I did zone out when he was telling me the story, he was on about the engines going over there, not planes coming over here, like I said I glaze over when all the facts and figures start coming out

Heres what he sent me ( he has a good point for a GB as well I think )

          Hi mate,

Here are the links and a brief description...

Rolls Royce supplied the Kestrel engine for the Bf 109 prototype, as the German engines weren't ready.

It also powered prototypes of Heinkel_He_70 (passenger and mail plane and a direct ancestor of the He 111) and Ju 86 & 87 Stuka.

In exchange for the engines supplied to RLM (German Reichs Air Ministry), RR got a He70G to use as an engine test bed.

It also saw use in Heinkel He 112 & 122.

It's amazing that RR got away with it, as the German military were not allowed to develop powered aircraft, post WWI, only gliders!

Post war, the Merlin was also used in the 1954 Hispano Aviación HA-1112-M1L Buchon, a Spanish built version of the Bf109 G-2 and the Italian Fiat G.55.

There's a suggestion for a club build for ya! - All RR engined WWII aircraft, or to make it a bit more difficult, Merlin engined aircraft only (still a big list!). :-)
