    German aircraft with D-day stripes?

Just been watching a you tube vid called "fight or the sky 1945 world war two fighter pilot education documentary" and the narrator said "These copied invasion day stripes failed to decieve our pilots". Did the Germans paint D-day stripes on their planes in an effort to decieve, because if they did that might make an interesting scheme for a build. The planes being shot up look like Ju 88's but with the camera shake, its camera gun film, its difficult to say, but the tails sorta look Ju 88ish.

Anyone got any gen in this as I've never heard of it before.

    Tony.

The Luftwaffe did use allied aircraft in a sort of reconnaissance role to track allied formations.

I've never seen any evidence for a Luftwaffe type finished with allied markings, particulary the distinctive markings for Overlord (invasion stripes). The stripes were applied shortly before the original date for Overlord (we're talking 24-48 hours, not days) to preserve both the security of the markings and of course the impending invasion.

I have seen supposedly allied gun camera footage which clearly shows a Mosquito under attack, presumably a case of "friendly fire".

I'll try to find the video you mentioned.

    Cheers

Edit: finally found the bit you mentioned. In the very last frames there does appear to be some form of stripes running across the wings. It certainly doesn't resemble any authorised Luftwaffe marking so maybe they are indeed false invasion stripes. On that evidence I would rate it an intriguing possibility.

Thanks for that Steve. Must admit your eyes must be better than mine because I couldn't see anything resembling stripes. But as you say it's an intriguing possiblity.

Tony I've ringed what I can see in a couple of captures.

Far from conclusive,I'm not even sure what type the aircraft are!

Just had a look at the images you have posted and the tail is squared off, could it be a Ju 188 do you think?
