    New Ilyushin Il-2 kits 1/72

I notice that soon after Academy bringing out a new Il-2 kit, Tamiya is about to release one too. Is there a link somewhere between the two manufacturers? or just a coincidence?

I didn't realise before reading on forums like this one, that a lot of kits are reboxes of other manufacturers' kits ( how do you guys get to know all this? ) so wonder if this is another example?

I will no doubt be buying one of them, but no idea which one yet.

    Thanks

    Mark

Hi mark , are we talking 1/72? I know academy released an Il2 in 1/72 about 2 years ago but havent heard about a 1/72 Tamiya . Academy have just released a single seat early version in 1/48 though ,which is a re-boxing of the excellent Accurate Miniatures kit . The Tamiya 1/48 is all their own work. If its a 1/72 Stormovik youre after then i can recommend a few good alternatives . The Academy single seater is very good and comes with a Very comprehensive decal sheet ,with about 12 options! cost- about £12 . Eduard also do a 2 seat version which is also good (ive made this personally , and found to be great although a few reviewers said the wing /fuselage joint was a nightmare - i didnt have any trouble with mine) and comes in at about £8 or £9 . If its a single seat early wing version you want , then if you can get the Smer Il2 Hi Tech boxing , which includes a P.E. fret , that looks very good too (ive got this in the stash ) This also includes optional parts for wheels or skis. The only real no no's are -stay away from the airfix and mikro kits ,theyre supposed to be pants!! Hope this helps , cheers tony

      Hi Mark

I find the following site quite useful to research kits. Where info is available, you can see how and when certain molds have been reboxed between brands and how and when the tooling was upgraded, whether they are still in production etc. Is quite useful when buying from on-line sites like e-bay. Usually searching a kit number pops up a lot of info on it, even which sites did reviews on the kit. Hope it helps in the future.
