How about artist's oils Dave?? Just a suggestion from stuff I have read, not from knowing anything -

little bit of oil paint mixed with a fair old bit of white spirit makes a great wash and it will still run around the panel lines.Comment

I have used this technique on some of my builds and it works great, a mixture of black and burnt umber or burnt sienna with white spririts in it to make a wash. I would paint the whole area in it and then drag a small cloth pad soaked in spirits to drag it in the direction required.

Thats great, just add enough black to get the colour you want, You can always add another darker wash if you need to.
