    Home made Airfield display base

To go with my A4 Skyhawk I thought I'd try my hand at making a small display base on which to pose it. Using a sheet of foamboard and a pack of Wills concrete sheets I have made a start on a lightweight and easy to make base. The Wills sheets were fixed to the foamboard with evil-stick and then sprayed with Railmatch concrete. I added a blob of Railmatch matt black and then sprayed along the panel lines and a general misting to subdue the cold tone of the plain concrete. When this has dried I'll add taxy way markings and parking stand numbers then complete with a strip of grassed area to add visual variety.

Neat looking base rick . Its amazing the difference putting a model on a base makes , it really lifts it, and as you have shown it doesnt have to cost a lot to look superb , i think its really going to complement the skyhawk, cheers tony

Great idea Rick makes a lot of difference to a model to see it in its own surroundings.

Most of my stuff is WW11 & I put them on grass. Good contrast to the camouflage.

Also as Adrian is doing at the moment I dot ground staff around to give the model a sense of scale. Problem is getting ground staff for modern aircraft.

Italeri also do 1/72 figures for modern scenes. Hasegawa have a 1/48 range for modern ground personnel, as do a few others. http://www.hasegawausa.com/figures.html

I got this finished earlier today. I painted the yellow lines after masking with tape with Railmatch faded yellow and used some spare locomotive decal sheet numbers for the parking stand. I could have gone further with other markings but I wanted to keep it fairly generic for use as a display for any smal aircraft. The strip of grass on the edge provides a bit of scenic relief. The concrete was gloss varnished then the decals applied before matt varnish to seal it. The varnish I used was from a couple of rattle cans that hadn't been used for a while and had gone off, but this has worked out ok with a fairly uneven surface finish so I'm not to bothered with the way it turned out.

In total I must have spent about £15 on materials, but this was for a six pack of foamboard and three packs of Will's concrete sheets so there is plenty more that can be knocked together.
