    1/72 Dornier 217E wanted

I have found a second hand Airfix 1/72kit of this, 04020. Does anyone know of any other kits of this particular model (the E)?

I would like to make one because one of the b*gg**s missed me by 100 yards in the bombing raid on Aberdeen in 1943.

    Doesn't Italeri do a 1/72 kit of the Do217?

Didn't one of these bomb RAF Lossiemouth too? I remember the shrapnel holes in the hangar that 202 sqn shared with GEF and the "ghost" that was said to haunt it. Not what you want to hear when you're on a sleeping duty on SAR.
On the bench: Airfix 1/48 Sea King HC4, Revell 1/24 Trabant.
Coming soon: Airfix 1/72 Phantom FGR2.
Just finished: Airfix 1/48 Stuka & Airfix 1/72 Sea King HC4.

Yes, but their site says that it is out of stock. I have asked them if and when it will be offered again.

          I have just discovered:

          AIRFIX AIRFIX 1/72 04020 DORNIER Do 217E/J

which is tempting. But it will be a very old ("old mould") kit and therefore possibly not very good. It states ("guarantees") that the kit is complete.

What are peoples' experienced of the quality of old Airfix kits?

I found at On Target Aviation - RAF Lossiemouth History :

"The only major Luftwaffe raid on the airfield came on the 26th October 1940, when three He111 bombers made a surprise dusk attack on the airfield. Two came in low from the North East and bombed a line of Blenheims being prepared for night flying. The third attacked from the South. One Heinkel crashed onto the airfield, brought down either by explosions or by the station Hispano gun. The four German crewmen were killed and are buried in Lossiemouth churchyard."

I guess that the blighters flew from Norway, like the Dornier 217E s that missed me.

            And, in Wiki:

"Although mainly a training unit for bomber crews during the Second World War, some operational raids were launched from Lossiemouth, the most important being 617 "The Dambusters" Squadron's successful attack on the Tirpitz, pride of the German battle fleet, on 12 November 1944."

Steve there is an Italeri kit for sale on evilbay. Bit on the pricy side but it's your choice. You could keep an eye out to see if more come up

Their aircrew Hard was full of all kinds of memorabilia including a slab of the armour plating from Tirpitz.

The older Airfix kits can be hit and miss affairs Steve. Expect to have to do a lot of cleaning up and extra detailing for a good end result. I actually quite like doing them, there is a satisfaction from turning one of those old kits into something that could start to rival a modern mould. However the kit you found has nothing on the one I have in my stash. It's so old it probably did bomb your neighbourhood all those years ago

Thanks. I am waiting for a reply from Italeri on when their Dornier 217E will be back in stock (which is my target) although a search for it on their site now shows "not found). If it is discontinued I will go for the 217M which you mentioned. Thanks for info.

Do you know what a "Historic Upgrade Kit" is?

Is it a old mould re-issued?

                              Thanks.
