BF 109 'Black 6'

    Hi guys

This is my first post having joined today!

I'm very glad I have and the site looks a host of information.....Excellent.

I am slowly building a collection of 1/24th Scale WWII aircraft and my next project is Trumpeters BF 109G.

I am converting it to a G2 variant as 'Black 6' and wondered if any of you knew of suitable decals or a decal sheet for this Warbird?

Some may say the scale is big enough to cope with hand stenciling but frankly I don't fancy trying the Number 6 on the fuselage although the rest I could probably manage with Decal spares and I may even try to hand paint the Wolf head emblem!!

    Hi Martin and welcome aboard.

1/24 is a bit big for me! I'm guessing that you have already checked Hannants for the decals. If you really can't find what you want an alternative would be to have some masks made up.

Mal Mayfield does some very nice stuff. He will make masks to order if you show him what you need. He's a model maker himself, which helps. I'm sure there are others too. In such a large scale painted markings would look very nice. A friend used some of Mal's on the VFS 1/24 P-47 (which is a monster) to very good effect.

I'm racking my brains to think of any other manufacturers of 1/24th Scale Warbirds apart from Airfix, Trumpeter, Vintage fighters and back in the dark ages Bandai!!

Aftermarket decals I have drawn a blank....unless I have missed one?

Had a look at Mal's site and it looks terrific.

I will contact him to see what he thinks or hopefully he will see this post!!

As you know Black 6 graced our skies over 10 years ago at Duxford and other shows but sadly had an accident only to be grounded and shut away in the RAF Museum Hendon. A terrible waste of time and effort made by Russ Snaden and his engineers. (

This is my little tribute to her and the guys who worked so hard to share, although only for a brief moment to my mind one of the greatest Warbird builds ever achieved since the War.

        Thanks again guys.

          You've got an interesting choice!

          What's on the current restoration.

Probably based on Barry Ketley's interpretation.

But then Sinisa Sestanovic came up with this quite recently (2009), but I don't know his source.

          Best of luck!

I don't know if this is of any use, but couldn't you use a font recognition site like this for the figure 6:

            http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/

Once the font is recognised it should be fairly straightforward to reproduce it in the size you need and print out a decal.

                Once again you the man!!

I did wonder at the time when I got up front and personal to her at Duxford many years ago if the emblem was accurate or not as I had never seen it documented on any campaign.

However, if you trace back the history of her she was captured from a forward airstrip I believe just outside of Tobruk and then sent back to the UK for evaluation at RAE Farnborough so i am guessing she must have had the insignia on her then.

Anyhow I think I will still have a go at hand painting it as in the larger scale its probably doable..... I hope!!

Are their any Bespoke Decal makers out there??

It's a thoroughly researched restoration and the emblem is very similar to Ketley's equally rigorously researched version. Sestanovic will have a good source for his version, it probably dates to a different period but as I said I don't know his reference. These emblems both evolved and changed over time.

There is/was a decal maker who did some work for a friend of mine a while ago. Paul Parkes has a site here.

                  http://parkes682decals.com/

He's still going as far as I know.

                  Cheers
