    DHC-2 Beaver Servicing markings

    Hi folks,

I am the S&STech at the RNZAF Museum. I am currently researching the servicing markings for military Beavers, the RNZAF's Antarctic Beaver specifically. I need to know what the markings are on the top & bottom surfaces of the elevator tips. From grainy photos I can see that it is four words on a single line.

Also if there are any markings on the upper surfaces of the wings especially around the wing tip fuel tanks.

These do not appear on civilian Beavers so any info for American U-6 Beavers (or L-20's) would help. I know that the Dutch Historic flight Beaver has these applied.

    Any Ideas ?

Hi Nathan. I know you have probably tried http://www.rnzaf.proboards.com/ and obviously there are no records with the RNZAF for these markings. You could try contacting the Museum of Army Flying http://www.armyflying.com or maybe the British Army Air Corps have records they can share https://www.army.mod.uk/aviation/29045.aspx You could also try contacting someone through http://www.dhc-2.com/current_cover_page.htm

Some walk around photos of the Dutch Beaver you referred to:

    http://www.dhc-2.com/id715.htm

Amn extensive walk around series here http://walkarounds.scalemodels.ru/v/walkarounds/avia/before_1950/beaver_goshagk/beaver9.jpg.html

There is a fuel drain marking under the wing but unsure about the upper surface. I don't see any elevator markings on any of them so far. Good luck.

Thanks for those Joe but unfortunately I have already seen these sites and the pics do not show the markings. You can just make out the wording ( 1" yellow stencil) on top of the elevator tip on the Dutch Beaver, just cant make our what is says.

Got a couple of good pictures via Dave Homewood ( rnzaf proboards) but same applies. I emailed the Museum of army flying a week and a half back, no reply yet! Emailed Neil at dhc-2.com this morning.

Idealy DH production drawings would have the info, or a TM for U.S. L-20's/ U-6's

      Thamks for the help

Okay. In the meantime cast your eye over this document Nathan, it is a full original DHC-2 flight manual. http://austingwatson.com/aviation/DHC-2-Beaver-POH.pdf

Also, a repair manual for the DHC-2: http://miravim.org/avimlibrary/Manuals/Airframe%20Manuals/Other%20Airframes/de%20Havilland%20Beaver%20DHC-2%20Repair%20Manual%20PSM-1-2-3%20Revised%2010%20October%201958.pdf

Thanks Joe, we have a copy of this as well as parts manuals etc. Damn things just dont have any painting info.

Neil at dhc-2.com is chasing some stuff for me, he says he cant get a response from the US Army museum either.

We are finding out more about our Antarctic Beaver as I work through this. I intend to create a 3 view drawing with all the painting details. I did the Antarctic Auster a couple of years ago and had the same problems with that scheme. It took about 6 months to find all the details.

          Cheers

No worries, good luck with finding the info you seek. I'll keep looking when I get time as well. Hopefully you can get the Beaver the way you want it in the fabulous Air Force museum soon. One last thought, Bombardier must have archival material from the DHC days?

              Hi Folks,

I have had some success, managed to track down the number for the US Army manual for the schemes and markings for the U-6 Beaver.

Tech Bulitin TB 746-93-2. We have a copy in our archives. Managed to trace it backwards from Tech Manual TM 1500-345-2. It was right under my nose the whole time.

This has nearly all the info I need but anything else will be appreciated.

Great news Nathan, glad you have found the information. By the way, what were those words on the elevators?
