1/8 Aston Martin DBR1 scratch build

I'm getting under way with my latest project.


The Aston Martin DBR1.


The body will be vac formed over a hand made buck, I'm making the engine in resin - casting my own parts and everything else will be made of a mix of brass tube/section, sheet, and plasticard.


I'll be making my own wire wheels too...


So far, the main body buck has been made and is currently at a vac formers to get some shell parts done. Hopefully I'll have some body parts back next week.


The engine is being made by completely re-shaping many of the parts from the Eaglemoss DB5 part work engine.


The head is re shaped, completely new camshaft covers, twin distributors, triple Weber carbs, exhaust, all ancillaries - all scratch made.


I'll post piccies as I move along.


You'll notice I'm making two engines.


One will be a stand-alone piece.

Looks like this is going to be rather special Roy. Lovely scratch making so far.

Wow. Love it, so how do you make this accurately? Books with dimensions from the manufacturer?

I have some excellent plans of the car as well as a LOT of Aston Martin books.


Making the 'buck' wasn't too difficult, as I also have some very old 'sandwich' plans that I worked from.

It isn't really skill - it's just patience and being a sad old geezer with too much time spent on a hobby...


A bit of an update.


The distributors are fitted and wired via ignition tubes.


I changed the leads from yellow to brown as the yellow ones looked too modern.


The head isn't fixed to the engine just yet...

I'm utterly gobsmacked -- didn't know such a thing was possible, outside a commercial outfit, that is!


That's just BEA-U-U-U-TIFUL work requiring enormous skill, not to mention a vast knowledge of cars in general and of the Aston Martin in particular. I get confused just peeking under the bonnet of a car!!!!!!


I'm definitely following this one -- "Chapeau", as they say here in France and "bon chance" !

Wow you guys - incredibly kind.


I still say it's not any particular skill, just stuff I've learned along the way of sticking bits of placcy together.


I've cast lots of little extra's now - triple Webers, manifolds, water feed pipes, trumpets, starter motor, Dynamo (no alternator back then) coil, oil filters, front pulleys etc etc etc...


A few detail parts added and they are drilled for the wiring later on.


Inlet manifolds now in place.


It should start looking like a 'proper' engine soon.
