    1933 Cadillac V16 Phaeton

This beastie has plagued me for 10 years or more. I really want to finish it! Although I think I am going to present it as a "barn find", that coat of dust on the wings is not a weathering effect!

This is the Italeri/Testors 1/24 scale "Al Jolson" car. It has some good points (they faithfully molded all 16 spark plugs) and bad points. There is lots of piping alongside the engine that is molded onto the block in a very unrealistic way (more resembling book shelves rather than pipes). I ground those off and put on aluminum pipes and p/e flanges.

The twin air filters on the firewall lacked intake vents which I added, along with the corrugated flexible pipes to the carbs. The wood floor boards were made by printing pictures of wood grain on regular paper. I added "wood" to the dash board as well (along with knobs and p/e ignition keys). I had a minor disaster when I lost the rather large floor piece (still haven't found it) so I made a new one. Flocked the carpets, made some pedals, and wore out the driver's seat, adding springs.

I got stalled when I realized there were no radiator hoses and I knew I was burnt out. I also want to scratch build the roof in a folded down position; the kit only supplies the top up. Also, I've discovered that the twin coils are stored in a cavity atop the radiator! And then I want to add a half dozen whiskey jugs and.....

Just like Gain I love the springs and I also love the little ignition key. Great model and we'll worth the effort.

                That does look seriously ancient.

One tiny observation - If it was an old 'left-to-die' car, should all the dash gauges not be at 'zero'?

                Lovely patina.

Well, but the car is haunted, didn't I mention that? The ghost in the electrics....

The dash is a weird part of the kit. Italeri actually inserted a photo of the real dashboard in the instructions in order to call out paint colors, especially the large piece of wood trim across the top. However, and I wish I still had a "before" photo of it, the chrome plated dash board piece in the kit was totally blank across the top with no wood moulding of any kind. Also, the centre plaque where the keys are located is also oddly blank. It really seems as though the mold master was never completed. Anyways, that is what prompted me to add a bit of veneer I pried off my bureau (oops, does my wife read this?) and a bit of a photo of some wood to the kit dashboard.

I remember this is where I left off on this kit. The kit radiator has two bulbous things on top which, after looking at a lot of photos, I believe are actually a pair of coils so I will add wires from them to the distributor. The two radiator hoses are omitted from the kit completely. I'm trying to find a single (non-stranded) electric wire of the right diameter with rubberish insulation that will look like a hose with the wire looking like the fitting on the radiator. So far nothing I've found will suffice. I drilled holes in the front of the engine which look too big so I'm a little frustrated!

P.S. Thanks for the compliments, I need 'em!!

I need to get started on something here.

I found a folded top from a Monogram 1939 Mercedes 540K that seems to fit exactly except that it does cover up the back seat a lot. I 'm thinking of gluing silk over it to replicate the fabric.

I'm not trying to replicate an "All Weather" phaeton, which is what this kit is, because I don't want to deal with the folding B pillars. I can't actually find any photos of one with the top down, just regular phaetons.
