1/24 Tamiya Morris Mini Cooper Racing - My first real project

So I'm 70% done, but I managed to take a picture after every instruction stage, I plan on throwing these into a video when I'm done

I'm fairly enjoying the kit, fits together perfectly, dry fitting helped a lot, my main regret was not painting as I went along, this mistake has made me decide to glue the bonnet down instead of allowing it to be lifted open or closed like the kit allows, silly me ):

So the first few stages involved assembling the engine and the start of the axle

At this point, the axle etc was added and then fitted to the chassis , at this point the kit allows you to set the angle of the wheels, so I turned mine to the right slightly in an attempt to make the kit look more dynamic in the end, I don't believe you have to glue these parts but once they were in place I decided to

At this point I couldn't resit fitting the body onto it to see what it was starting to look like, being my first proper kit, I was personally impressed with how realistic the parts look

More parts were added to the engine bay, along with the rear axle and exhaust

I then decided to use the racing style wheels that come in the kit over the standard Mini wheels

I then started on the interior, with pedals, gear stick and handbrake, dash, seats and steering wheel, which I glued in place rotated to the right a little to match the wheels. The roll cage and some further parts were added to the engine before another test fit before I realised it would actually need painted :P

So I sprayed a fey layers of red on with the airbrush, attempting to highlight in a few places like the edges of the bucket seat and the centres on the underside, unfortunately it didn't work out that well for me, but after the glass I was pretty happy with the tone of the red in the end, but unfortunately adding the windows I smeared the glue with my finger by accident on the driver door ): Also when I was glueing the window in, it slipped on me and using plastic glue of course the paint had melted into the window... D:

After a few more assembly stages mainly the bonnet hinge and the door cards, but afterwards these were removed alongside the windows again, disaster move on my part, but I just wasn't confident enough to paint the window frames without getting it on the window

So that's where is it is now, I'm fairly enjoying it so far and has definitely been a learning experience for me, C&C will be definately appreciated, and any tips for the windows for future projects will be really appreciated :P

Davy looking good! Try using a water base glue for the windows,I use Formula '560' canopy glue but good old elmers works as well. Looking forward to seeing the Mini finished up ,cheers Trey

Cheers for the suggestion, I'll check the model store on Monday for some and thanks, I do also, I had started the Airfix BMW Mk1 Mini, but after airbrushing the shell wrong I gave up, one of the lines was wonky, so I'm in between the idea of using the provided decals for this mini or mask off and do them myself, being able to take the bonnet off is a hand for masking though

Hi Davy,

I built this kit a couple of years ago and found it a fun build and good quality!

Infact i like this kit that much ive got another three varying versions in the good ol stash :P

PVA glue i used when i did that kit to fix the clear parts as that's what i had to hand at the time, I now use humbrol clear fix with good results which your local model shop should sell or the revell equivalent.

Ill be watching out for the progress on this looking good so far!

I believe the local shop is all revell, would you know what the name would be so I don't look daft asking? :P

Do you have any pictures of yours? :P I think I'll be buying the non racing one once I complete this :P

And may I ask, did you repaint the chrome parts or leave them standard? I want to remove sprue lines but of course that will remove the paint :S

Ah i see, Its Revell clear contactor glue which says its for clear parts etc but to me i looks like a liquid poly consistency, Probs worth having a look at it first and see what other glues they have to offer aswell

With the chrome parts i made sure when removing them carefully ,leaving little touch up's to be done which i used the old Humbrol 11 which was super chrome compared to the new version.I just stuck with the chrome finish provided which for me worked out fine.

Wow, I like it :P I'm afraid to comment and bump the thread Your interior looks great and I love the way you got your pinstripes up the side perfect, it' my main fear, that I'll get one little wrinkle in it

And cheers for that Ben, I'll pick up a bottle tomorrow then, my plan is to cut the drivers side window strip in half leaving the drivers window open, then I'll find some sort of mesh for it to make it look like a proper racing style mini :P

Hopefully going to do a little work on it tonight when I get home from work (:

Thanks Davy, Its not as bad to do the pinstripes as you think just make sure to have plenty of water on the body of the car first atleast that way you've got time to position it and use some tissue to soak the water away when happy, Thats all i did anyway

Sounds good to me, nice to add your own touch to a model

Small progress update, started work on the interior, I'm going for a black and cream leather style, however I'm unsure whether to paint the roll cage silver or gloss black :S

Opinions? Also I haven't added the black tot he seats or added any washs :P the bucket seat also needs a gloss black bottom (:

I tried a little weathering on the underside of it also, being a race car, you would assume it would take a few knocks so I'm going to add some textured paint when I weather it a bit more
