Tamiya Ducati 916 / 3D Printed Wheels...

Hi all,

New to the forum and a novice modeller to put it lightly. I don't know if this post is in the correct area, please let me know if not.

So I bought a Tamiya 1/12 Ducati 916 kit just before the lockdown started and haven't made much progress :smiling6: but I have designed and had some Marchesini style wheels 3D printed.

They arrived this evening and I'm pretty happy with them, apart from one side of each of the wheels looks terrible because of all the support material necessary when 3D printing.

Any tips on how to get them looking 100%?

It looks like a resin-printed material, I think this can be sanded to get a smoother finish, but you better test it on an outer-spot thats get hidden by the tire...

Oh i'm interested in bikes. Just never done a model of them. Massive Kawasaki and Ducati fan here. Miss my ZX6R. But i'm still holding out for a Ducati 899

I started using Tamiya sand papers to get the leftover support material off, went in with a hand / nail file / drill I borrowed from the girlfriend :smiling2:

I think I will get them re-printed using another method I hadn't seen previously, the support material has deformed the edge and detail of the wheels too much.

Going to get these re-printed and another design I'm currently working on printed at the same time :thumb2: The finished wheels should not need any post processing apart from some colour.

Welcome best thing about modelling is its not timed, Building at your pace is what its about How good or bad makes no odds its a personal achievement we all have fails and favourites alike Learning from your mistakes is the best way forward, i like bikes and would love More time to do them but still learning like your wheels 3D printing thats something opens a realm of Possibilities..

Hi all,

A quick wheel update :nerd:

So I spent some time re-working the original set of wheels I had printed and designed another set with some really fine details, which unfortunately haven't come out / been lost during the cleaning and dyeing process.

I will re-work this design and get a new set printed in the near future.

The SLS printing process with dyeing is a slightly longer way to go, but there is now nothing i need to do to them. They have an almost anodized finish to them.

I'm really gutted about the new style not being perfect, they would look spectacular with all the fine details, but this is a 1/12 scale wheel, so some of the thicknesses are less that 0.75mm.

Let me know your thoughts on any new designs.

Getting the time to dedicate solid hours to actually building the bike at the moment is difficult. I'm beginning to fill and sand the seam in the body work of the Ducati, which is quite challenging for me, I feel like I've filled and sanded the same spot about 1000 times over :tears-of-joy:

The wheels are reasonably inexpensive so making these initial discoveries and learning the limitations is really enjoyable, the re-printed set has come out better than I had expected, which is a real buzz. The new design needs some more refining and areas made thicker so that it comes out solid next time.

Do you have many models on the go at the moment?

yes 2 Suzuki rgv 500's on civilian models, just about complete, there's a few of mine on there, did the 916 February 2010, my first model since child hood I have it in the cabinet its a bit ruff as I built it when I was recovering from heart surgery and hand painted it but its a constant reminder of where I was......got the bug and have tried to make time ever since … last couple of months have been my most productive ....
