    Grass, Tarmace & Concrete

Just put up some new shelves to display aircraft. They look OK but the shelves are in oak (plastic conti board).

Wanted to put each aircraft on its own section of grass tarmac etc. Wanted a good finish & grass which is not bright emerald green ie I want muted green.

Any info. on where to obtain this stuff & also any advice would be keenly welcome. Most models are 1/72 does this sort of thing come to scale ?

our local model shop sells stuff for train sets as well, you can buy scatter in many different shades of grass, or static grass which looks a little better, just paint green shade on base, when dry paint on some normal pva glue and scatter the stuff on , when dried just bang or blow loose stuff off on to sheet of newspaper and put it away for next time.i have had limited sucess with static grass because you can get it to stand up like real grass by the use of specialist machines, i did it with a balloon which was rubbed against my head to create a static charge and then holding it just above the static grass.tarmac can be as easy as a sheet of wet and dry sandpaper or spray something to look like concrete...there are loads of ways of doing this and i am sure the rest of the guys will be along soon with lots more ideas for you.

      Hi, Laurie, try this:-

For 1/72 grass get some tile adhesive, polyfilla or similar (powder) mix with water to a stiff consistancy and spread where you need it, then get an old tooth brush and dab lightly on the mixture...then paint in a mottle various shades of green (I use green shed paint!) lo and behold, 1/72 grass!

You will be hard pushed to buy ready made grass in 1/72 scale that looks like the real thing...just try the above method on a bit of scrap stuff.

For tarmac, I've seen some long winded methods, but the answer is simple...Use a piece of roofing slate, if a wet look is required just give it a coat of household varnish.

      Concrete:-

Get a bit of white A4 card, carefully mark 35mm squares on it with a modelling knife. Using thinned grey acrylic, slosh it over the card....Concrete with expansion gaps! Add oil stains and tyre marks as desired.

To conclude, I have looked at ready made stuff, particularily 1/72, that comes close to the real thing with no success.

The above is worth a try if now't else.

Laurie Grass is easy fake animal fur air brush to the colour you want and trim to required length: Tarmac i piece of very fine wet dry sand paper paint on markings an there you go.

Same as above fine wet dry paper, air brush gray, use a permenant marker to do expansion line and paint markings. I hope this is useful.

Hi laurie , I'm with ron - use the bright stuf but then just paint it which colour you want. Ive used it in the past and sprayed it a more dull green and brown ,it looks fine ,much better than the snotty green it came out of the packet!! The concrete is easy too, just as ron described . I recently knocked up a quick base in about 5 mins for the photos of my Aichi b7 Grace using the back card off an A3 sketch pad and a few coloured felt tips to add the joint lines, grass and weeds ,oil stains etcThe card was a concrete colour to start with so it was a very quick job!! see what you think , cheers tony
