    Hail Caesar

I have long had an interest in the Roman army, way back in my war gaming days they were my favourite army. Sadly the army was sold off and that was it until recently I saw a box of Warlord Games Romans’ going fairly cheap on eBay. Couldn’t resist and bought them. The subject has come up before as I’d never painted this brand of figures but was also asked if I’d seen the figures from Victrix I hadn’t but managed to get a sprue with the intention of painting them up side by side so here goes.
    First the sprue’s

First up. Victoria. Four multi part figures.

Warlord Games, 10 multi part figures, the box sets certainly provide value for money.
I then assembled one of each, first the Victrix figure.

The detail is very nice, figure in black undercoat.
    Now the Warlord figure

Again nice detail but it quickly became apparent that there’s a size difference. The Warlord figure is the standard 28mm figure but the Victrix is just over 32mm!
I’ve decided to continue but will put the Victrix figures away for another day.
Bases now dry and also under coated and I’ve blocked in the flesh parts.

Lovely looking figures Mick - certainly get my juices flowing. Will follow with much interest.

I expect nothing less than this from you:

This is a diorama of the siege of Avaricum in the West Point museum. I first came across these dios in an old Time Life book on Imperial Rome. Incredible work and very inspiring.

Looks good. Should paint up well. A lot of 28s are getting to 30 plus these days, they call them “heroic”..... it’s basic scale creep. After all, 28s used to be 25s....and 18s used to be 15s....

          Ralph welcome along.
Many thanks Peter but I’ve only got 34 figures
I hope so Tim, a bit of effort on my part. There are so many producers out there, the only problem I’d see is mixing them in units even though I appreciate you do get some bigger blokes

            Hi Mick
You could probably mix them in the same army, but not within the same unit. There seems to be a huge rang of plastic 28s out there now, most of them excellent.....

Right gents a bit more done, firstly I painted the armour with plate steel then gave them both a black wash.

Next I started with the red. This is the result of several coats of dragon red. Next up will be the leather bits then I shall start the more detail painting.

JR it certainly has, its worked out better than I thought but the last time I painted Romans I didn't have the collection of washes etc I do now.
Thank you Peter, I'm definitely leaning towards the Victrix figures as the detail is crisper, I can definitely feel an order coming on.
                              Thanks Steve and welcome along.
Thanks again Ralph, just settling in to my first night shift so might just get some more done over the next few days, I'm still waiting some shield decals to arrive.
