The latest scratch build. A Well Bottomed Gig

Having been a model maker for a little over 85 years majoring on aircraft & boats, I felt it time to broaden my interests. (See my profile).
Way back in the eighties I had built the Remploy kit of a Thames Sailing Barge model, the "Kathleen" , and based the model on a vessel I once part-owned, the "Edith & Hilda".

The box the barge kit came in, and which I still have, displayed a picture of a Well Bottomed Gig. The kit is now unavailable, but the drawings are still to be had, so I sent off for them.
I have yet to add the decorative lining but the Gig itself is finished & here it is - awaiting your comments!

That looks great Don. I imagine scratch building the wheels was difficult.

Again, that is superb. Love the little touch of the wear on the footstep. Beautiful job ?. Are you going to scratchbuild the horse to go with it ? (only kidding).

Thanks, Jim. The wheels invoked a great deal of head scratching but suddenly I had a 'Eureka' moment! I cut two sets of felloes for each wheel and glued them together brick wall style, flat on like this...

... and then carefully cut the spokes to fit snuggly onto the completed rim and glued them in with medium CA. Bingo!!

That's the trick, Neil. Never give up - and create a broad range of subjects to model. Otherwise boredom can creep in and you might be tempted to take up chicken farming.

Anyway - here's the finished (?) model, the lining was done this morning. A bit rough but so what. Good enough for hand painting and viewing in a dark room!

Thank you, Paul. It took ages and several attempts with fine sables and a steady hand but in the end I took it by surprise with a ruling pen and did the whole lot in a half hour with Humbrol enamel - all freehand!

A ruling pen! That's a thing you don't hear about much these days. I learnt to use one as a professional architecture modeller. We used it for window bars and frames especially. I still have mine but I haven't used it for ages.
                  Beautifully done,by the way!

Here's an update and probably the last image of it 'cos it's finished and I've nothing more to say about it. Unless, of course, anyone here has a question!

The tyres are on. 3/16" dia. rubber cord CA'd onto the rims.

I think that I previously said that the kit originally did not have working springs - so I did my own thing and made the to work by using shim steel cut to width x length with working shackles and hangers.

As I said, that's all I have to say about this model. Now for the next project, A ship in a bottle! WAY HAY!!

(p.s. Please remind me, papa, how to get notification by email of replies?)
