    Wood Butchering, or Kinda Sorta

With a construction background and the proper tools, I've been able to avoid the "contractor" pitfalls and do all the work myself. Remember, it's always cheaper to learn on someone else's material. "But I cut it three times and it's still too short." See what I mean?

After living in this house for over 20yrs it was time to redo the kitchen cabinets and my wife insisted on Rustic Hickory, as in, holes and all. How much is a happy wife worth? Everything! The counter tops are poured resin, a very fun project, and not very difficult at all. The stairs, Nulle post, flooring, lighting, cabinets, countertops, repainting walls, oven downdraft install, bay window seat and drawers, etc., and not a contractor in sight. Got all this done, including some excellent equipment, for right around $12k USD.

Sorry, I don't do piece work or remods, I'm retired, HA!

P.S. Youtube came in handy on more than one occasion figuring out details and proper procedures, etc.

Wow Steven!!! I can see that all your woodwork on your dio's has definitely influenced that fabulous kitchen work. Looks most excellent and so rustic too!!! Fantastic job and I'm with Mark on the show case, but SWMBO would probably disagree with that thought...

                Thank you, Neil and Paul.

That Hickory was $4.29bft at a lumber supply shop in Spokane, WA. I got a deal because of the bulk purchase, plus the flooring.

Thanks, Allen and Mark. Just so you know, I did build another curio cabinet for my boss and recovered the lower half of that huge cabinet in the dining room. That's the only reason this dio is continuing right now. That end-cap china cabinet is shakey ground, guys, ya wanna get me in hock?:surprised: I already owe the dogs back rent as it is.:face-with-head-bandage:

                        Thanks, Guys!

It's funny looking back now, all those years scraping, just barely getting by raising a family, while I busted my tail beating my body in construction to finally reap the benefits of it all. Most of my pals and co-workers were clueless on how to do much of anything for themselves construction-wise. So, over the years I've enjoyed many a ribeye steak and shrimp lunches while pouring concrete or building decks, and so on. Not to mention the $$ I've saved myself on my own home. Every project was material cost only, except electrical if needed, and that was usually an easy trade-out.
