Camo's coming on nicely. That black masking stuff is quite strange, you have to spray quite soon as it slowly flows downwards. At least the stuff I have does.👍 1Comment

Thanks Jim. Yes, it's the same masking putty stuff that is packaged by a few model supply manufacturers. Yes, it does flow with gravity. Come back the next morning and it will look like the Persistence of Memory painting by Salvador Dali. Great to watch in its tin though, self levels and is rather satisfying.

My first Luftwaffe mottle complete. I practiced with various mixes and pressures and distances on a piece of primed plastic, and during the paint job, a piece of cardboard. I ended up with approximately 90% thinner to 10% paint, pressure set to 12 PSI, and the needed cap removed. I varied the distance to the model according to the pattern I wanted. A couple of cock ups, but thankfully nothing that couldn't be corrected. In many ways this is more forgiving to apply than the uniform and tight schemes found on RAF aeroplanes. I also took the opportunity to paint the trim tabs red (second photo). Gloss varnish next.

Decals on, but not without issues. As I discovered early in the build, these are very thin and delicate decals, not the usual thick type that Tamiya often supply. They hate handling and decal solutions. I started with the JG301 ID band, knowing this would be the one that would break if any were going to. Soaked in warm water, prepped the area with water, no solution. It went on okay to begin with, but it was impossible to manoeuvre after a few seconds, and then proceeded to disintegrate. So did one of the swastikas. I used a spare for the swastika, masked off and sprayed the fuselage bands. The remainder of the decals were soaked in cold water, I was very careful not to apply them until they were totally free moving on the paper. Even so you only get 30 seconds or so to place them before they decide to make wherever they are their home. I also blindly followed the decal numbering and made an error with the wing walk way markings, but they are in their permanent homes and there they shall stay. I'll try to find something in my spare decal box. In the meantime, here we are, with a very sparing amount of decal solution overnight.
