    "to do and die"

hey there everyone. glad to be back in another group build and it's such a good choice of build. so many idea's running through my small brain. i would have liked to build a large dio of one of the beach scene's but sadly after xmas, money is short. so i'm gonna do something smaller but hopefully still with a lot of impact, detail and style. anyone who read the start of my first summer G.B post will know that i love my war movie's (and who doesn't?). and after watching it again recently, i've decided to do something from "saving private ryan". a homage you could say. i'm going to try and do a diorama based on a scene from the movie when miller's unit moves from dog beach up to the side of a bunker, pinned down by a german machine gunner, they check out the situation with a mirror stuck to a bayonet.

i've got myself 2 classic tamiya kits for this. the 1:35 scale u.s army assault infantry kit and the smaller u.s army infantry kit. and i will just put together 4 or 5 soldiers from bits of both kits, maybe even a wee bit of customizing too. then the usual mix of dirt, stones and a bit of polystirene picked up from outside. i'm such a scavenger, lol. hey, sometimes you've gotta be.

This will be good Bobby, nice subject. I have but an hour ago finished watching The Making of Private Ryan on a DVD I have and it shows, as well as the beach landing, the very scene you are building and how they did it.

Keep the pictures of the progress coming..

@ ron. i'd like to see that. i might have to pop out and buy that. my dvd is just the movie (orignal maybe). i've take'n picture stills of the scene bit by bit and was going to work from them. but as well as a homage, i'd like the dio to stand out as a good wee model of part of the action and chaos of normandy invasion.

Probably my favourite war movie and one of the most powerful moments in the film. This should make a cracking diorama.

Bobby, the 'making of' DVD is part of a Special Edition 2 disk set of Saving P.R., so I don't know if you can get just the one disk.

If you can't get it, I can lend it to you. Just P.M. me if you want to....It's been a cracking reference for my beach dio. so it would be great for your build.

The thing is, I know I would get it back 'cos otherwise the whole of Scale Models would get to know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

            Cheers,

            Ron

Just come to me what the scene you are doing is. I cant say its the best scene in the whole film as the whole film was bloody good. Its going to be a good theme for a dio that's for sure.

                    figures build.

hey there. finally got some spare time to get to work on my firgures. made up 6 in total to equal the characters from the movie clip. there was a fare wee bit of customizing needed so there was a lot of fiddling about but i think i've got some good positions. 2 of the figures had to be cut up in the arms and legs then re-positioned and gaps filled with putty. a knife with mirror and sniper rifle where then added to what is miller and jackson. i also had to make up a few backpacks for them coz the kits only had 4 of them. then ofcourse i added the rifle straps, helmet straps and finally small bits of material to the cpt and sgt's arms to incorporate the idea of paper armbands covering their markings. i still have to give 3 of the helmets net covers and straps but i'm gonna leave that till i've paint them with the suitable markings. sadly i think my camera is giving up the ghost so the pics aren't the best. i will give all the figures an undercoat and try and take good clear photo's and post them up shortly.

What a transformation Bobby, those figures look really good. It's nice to see there is someone else apart from me and Paul that gets a sadistic buzz out of chopping figures about!

This has all the makings of a top notch diorama. keep it up!
