I know you won't be into exactitudes what the colour of your sand will be...neither would I!....But I thought you might like to use these as a reference :-
I took them whilst on a holiday last May when travelling the Invasion area. Although only a few miles apart, see the difference in sand colours?

The concrete obsticle is at Juno, the Canadian beach. About head height.
Still waiting for paints for my other build, so started on this one.
I spent all day yesterday and last night cleaning up the seams on the figures. How I wish they'd make these figures in hard plastic like Valiant do! It'd make life so much easier. I appreciate that many of these figures are used in war gaming so need to be a bit tougher, but it's still a PITA to clean them up and paint them. I'm trying Col's (CDW) trick of roughing up the surface by shaking in a container with some bird grit. We'll see how it goes.
I also made a couple of prototypes for the beach defences. I think I got the sizes about right, just got to build a few more (and get them a little straighter!).
I'll have some rocks/dunes rather than use the pre-moulded stuff supplied in the kit. The plan is to have rocks at each end with a gap protected by barbed wire. The first wave of troops have reached the dunes and are about to blow the wire. The second wave is just starting to arrive.
Thats a good size base. I'm sure that once you get going, you'll be able to add a few bits and bobs- A bit of water, a landing craft and a tank.... lol

I found this picture which will help with my layout.

I'll have to use some licence with distances, but I should be able to include the posts, ramps and hedgehogs without it looking silly.
I won't be using the barbed wire I bought. Even though it's sold as HO/OO scale, it's much too thick (it should be OK for 1/35), but I've got some very thin wire I might be able to use.
I got the first batch of figures painted. I'll wait 'til they're all done before adding a wash, then it will be the same on them all.

PS Unless there's a kit I can buy, I won't be making any Belgian gates!
Regarding the size of the wire used Dave in this scale, you could try using some pliers to 'chew' it up slightly, this rags the surface and gives it more definition, of course you are not going to get the barbs but you get the impression of barbed wire.
Taking shape very nicely Dave.......As an add-on to Si's suggestion, get your thin wire and a round section pencil, or anything of a suitable diameter, then wrap the wire around it, nice and tight then....boing, you have very respectable 1/72 barbed wire.
I think my barbed wire will have to be plain. The wire I've got is much too thin to try your idea Si - which is a great pity as it sounds much better than trying to add individual barbs somehow!
I've already got my wire coiled round a pencil Ron. I'm just hoping it's springy enough to keep it's shape when I take it off. I think I'll maybe get away with making three or four coils the same length and laying them down so the coils mix together. If I use a few drops of superglue to join a few coils where they cross and fix them to some uprights it should look OK.
I hope so 'cos my figures are gonna look real silly with their bangalores and no wire to cut!
Meanwhile, back to the hedgehog production line .....
