    Builder's 1/24 Tamiya Mini Cooper

    The Plan

This is my entry into the GB. As Pete is already doing the same kit, I will be using this kit to build the civillian version of the Mini Cooper MK I, I have not decided on a colour yet, so that will be wait and see. But here are the kit details.

    Kit Details:

Kit Name: Tamiya 1/24 Morris Mini Cooper 1275S Rally '67 Monte Carlo Rally Winner

    Kit Number: 24048

Kit History: Kit was released in 1984 and is based on Tamiya kit 24039 released in 1983.

You are right Paul this kit is such a dream to build

Here is the first build update.

I began by cleaning the parts and sanding the body. I washed the body with water and soap before beginning.

I assembled part of the engine.. the part that was going to be all one colour. I then primed all the parts I wanted to with Tamiya Spray Can Grey Primer.

I have chosen to paint the car in one colour and not have the roof white, personal preference.

I began painting the small parts first or sub assemblies before I begin construction. The underside / chassis was painted using XF-18 Enamel and Tamiya Enamel Thinner with a paint to thinner ratio of 2:1. This was airbrushed on other small parts as well including the dash board and steering wheel,

All sub assemblies have been painted in their base colour. The engine is a mix of Tamiya XF-5 and X-5 (Matt Green and Gloss Green). The brake discs and some parts are Tamiya XF-56 Metallic Grey, and the rest of the parts are Tamiya XF-16 Flat Aluminium. Once again these are all enamel paints airbrushed with a paint to thinner ratio of 2:1. I always use Tamiya Enamel Thinner as it doesnt increase the drying time and I dont get any inconsistencies in colour. I use to use Mineral Spirits, Turpentine and even Laquer thinner, but the best results I have gotten are by using Tamiya Enamel thinner. It also works very well with Humbrol Enamels as well.

Some parts were coloured Tamiya XF-84 Dark Iron Enamel.

IThe body is ready to be painted!

The colour chosen is Tamiya TS - Dark Mica Blue. I like this colourm and don't really know wether the car was ever painted this colour but I dont really care if it was because this is the colour I want my model to be!

I am using Laquer Paints because I have had good results with them in the past. The paint is set in hot water for 5 minutes before it is shaken and sprayed on.

        Here is the body

I will now leave this inside a plastic lunch box (which has been thoroughly cleaned and dried), for a day so to make sure it dries properly and no dust settles on it.

Next up, I will detail up the small parts, and start work on the chassis. It should be complete over the weekend, and I then might move on to the interior.

I might even switch over to my other project (the 1/35 Commando Car) if I get time in between. It all depends on what I feel like doing tomorrow.

Time for me to get some ZZZZ's

I hope you all enjoyed the build update and the photos. All comments are welcome.

Thanks Colin, yeah I wanted to give it more of a modern day custom version of the cooper.

Would love to see how that turned out Peter, let us know mate.

Heres the latest update. So I completed the chasis, some of the paint has come off the sides and will be redone once the car is fully built

The engine is near complete, some more parts will go on once the car is put together. I will also give it a wash once the paint has dried a bit more too.

I did up the tyres, painted the rims Tamiya XF-11 Chrome Enamel (Paint to thinner ratio 2:1)

I then realised one of the tyres was the wrong one!!! So changed that one out

The dash board, needs a bit more of a touch up here and there

Steering wheel, I want to keep a metallic wheel with a horn button in the middle.

I then built a cheap quick photo booth and am testing it out in this build update. I have uploaded a post showing how I made the photo booth here:

Here are the photos taken in my new photo booth.

I hope you all liked the build update. All comments welcome!
