I agree with Andy: that looks like bare plastic. Metallic-coloured plastic is about the worst you can have, because you always get different shades in it, that you can see as flow lines like on your model, as well as when you cut or scrape it, when it will always turn darker than the rest. Remove mould lines etc. and then spray the body silver, is my advice.

Yep. Silver plastic. I build a Scania cab a while back that had Blue metal flake plastic. I polished some up as they did not get used and they looked pretty good. but the slightest scuff or scratch.... destroyed. Paint will look much better.Comment

Quick update. Some progress over past couple of days. Parts given a very light coat of white primer which doesn't show up well in the photos. Air intakes assembled and fitted. Axles and floor pan painted with 90% Gloss Black and 10% Metalic silver mix. Started to assemble as much of the body shell as I can so that it can all be sprayed as a single unit. Parts went together really neatly, Also partially assembled front and rear spoilers. Also ordered a set of photo etched seat belts. Not sure if they are the right colour. Despite much research I couldn't find a picture of the seat belts on line. Anything will be better than the moulded ones in the kit. Plenty of cleaning up to do before painting.

Morning chaps. Progress report. Engine now painted and assembled. This is the closest I will ever come to owning an F1 Engine. I am not going to go crazy on the engine as I have no intention of having it visible. I think this car is all about the smooth lines and curves hence I have spent some time in filling and sanding the seam lines on the shell body panels. Now primed and ready for some serious silver painting.
Body shell prior to sanding.
And some of the finished body shell now primed in white. I am pleased with the final result.
I have also made up and prepared some of the other parts ready for application of silver.

You are so right Jim. Having now moved on with the build I realise how impossible it would have been to have achieved anything like a decent result without painting. I was glad of the advise and comments given when we were debating the issue.SteveComment

Latest build update. Two coats of silver applied to body shell and fairings/spoilers. One coat of gloss also put on to aid decal application. I have spent a couple of evenings on applying the carbon decals to the many wheel struts etc. Quite a tricky job as there are lots of contours to follow. Also some of the decals you have to apply as a single decal and wrap around the suspention struts which I don't like doing so I am cutting them into two to make application easier. I am leaving the gloss coat for 24 hrs to dry and will hopefully start applying body shell decals tomorrow.
