Ian M's Motor Yacht Bruma 1/43 scale Panart.

Bruma is a converted trawler registered in Spain, The kit is All Wood, with a bit of metal here and there! total length is about 85cm
I have also purchased a few extra bits....


There are Six full size sheets of "instructions". and a bag of printed silk awnings and a flag. A Spanish one!


Loads of bit of wood, some bags with brass and white metal fittings...Turned wooden posts! And the Rope for the rigging.


All the wood is very cleanly laser cut!


A large bunch of planks. I wonder what they are for?

More metal bits...
and last but not least...

Some UJs, a pair of motors, some better prop shafts and brass props. Also some Teak and Abachi wood. I am not to keen on the deck planking as per the kit, so I will do something different...
A few tubes of glue and some 'araldite' type stuff to stick it all together with and some pins and clamps to hold it together.

I hope I can get it sort of finished in time. If not tja,. I will just have to carry on alone

Great choice. Looks a nice , comprehensive kit and extras. Should build into an impressive model. Are you intending to put in remote control?

I might, which explains the motors and all that. They really need fitting in as the hull is built. So not an easy thing to fit later. If the weather carries on as it is I will have a lake across the road...

That is a lovely looking kit. Whenever people spoke of Wooden model kits to me in the past, I thought just a few bits of wood and maybe some rigging cord. I obviously lacked any concept of what a wooden Boat/Ship could be, until I joined this Forum ( apologies to the wooden model builders for my ignorance). Will be along for the voyage if I may say ?.

Well the Man flu has not slipped its grip. The other side of 60 and have got a cold every spring and every autumn since I was a nipper! Anyway.
Popped the top of the glue!
First stop the hull 'frets'
The parts are laser cut and are very clean but the frames are not numbered so that is the first job.

The full size drawings are clearly numbered so just a case of writing the numbers on before freeing them from the fret. Most pop out with a little press others need a blade to cut the tab. Then dry fit them all.

As would be expected the fit was excellent. Just a light rub with a sanding stick to remove the small amount of char, from the laser.
Still a nice tight fit and square which is a good thing.
More later. After I have found a drill bit the same size as the pro shaft and one the Motor bearing house. The holder needs a bit of creative joinery as the kit is make for a single motor but It will run much better on two...

Get stuffed
or the art of fitting rudder tube and Prop shaft tubes...
Time for some two part:


The Keel beam is 6mm thick (or thin) through which a stuffing tube for the rudder has to pass. The tube is..... 6.5mm OD. ?
Turned out you have to cut the keel and block it out with the provided fillets. I wondered what they were for. This, of course, ment that the axle tube holders have to be fitted as well. So out came the saw.... I just love cutting into an expensive kit...not. a small grove in both of the fillet bits and some two part epoxy was mixed. All the parts lined up and glued then clamped into place. Now I have to wait until tomorrow! ?
Or work some more on the cabin part:

It can well be that there are three full size plans over the kit, but the instructions are just a text on the back of one of the sheets. The wood for the cabin is thinner but has a light teak? vener. The 'orible box joints are hidden by edging lists so will not be seen.
A question: The original Bruma has the rear most roof of the cabin, the part with the narrow middle bit painted white like the other roofs. I was thinking it is a deck and should be finished as one. The area is the open bridge.
I just realised that I have failed to post an image of what it is I am actually building. Duh!

In the photo you can see the open bridge. Would you say the planking should be as on deck or White like the roofs.

Little setback with the shaft but I'm sure you'll figure it out, looking good so far.

Can't tell about the decks, looks all white to me apart from the cabin floor?

In the photo you posted the white bits are roofs to the cabin. the wood part what I consider a deck. But my question is answered, Looks good in wood, The instructions say paint it white!

Glad I know what She will look like, it shows rigging in the picture, does that mean you will be adding sails? BtW is it just me or does anybody else see it as Burma when reading the title. I am beginning to irritate myself ( I know how my friends and relatives feel now ) .

Apparently Bruma is spanish for Haze or mist... Still an odd name.
Sails? Nope. I sold the sewing machine ages ago.

Guess which silly bugger cut his Stern Tubes to long!
To make a short story from a long drama. The tubes are fitted with a collar that traps the axle. Once in place pretty much impossible to remove without destroying it. Two new ones on order along with some actual lights so I dont have to use the kits painted wood dowels.... Really? not on my watch.
So today was a day of feeling sorry for myself. Shut my man flu infested body in the cave and made some of the fiddly bits.
I also sorted out a twin motor mount.


The hatch covers on a yacht are very rarely flat as they will not shed water, the ones in the kit? Flat as a pancake. A few bits of thin (1mm 3ply) plywood and a thrashing with the sandpaper. The tops will get a new cover of either ply and paint or some Abaschi or Teak veneer.
I must admit the detail parts in this kit are a bit on the cheap side but hey ho. The vent pipes on the roof of the cabin are made of Dowel! and NO instruments in the wheelhouse. WWW.findstu.ff me thinks.

The four 'ladders' need pairing up to make folding gang-planks. The ends need trimming first though.
The super detail of the Anchor Winch is only surpassed by the Navigation Lights.
The boxes.. Two in the wheel house and tow on the foredeck, two yet to be sanded and then they need edging lists.
Right nuff of this twaddle.

Just seen this one Ian, a great looking kit, and a great start.

Believe it or not this is the result of a pretty much solid weekend at the bench. (the boss is on a course).

The hatches have be veneered

A quick rub down then a sposh of sanding sealer.

The wheel house is way to boring. considering it is so open I decided to 'do it up a bit'.

Made a second of the smaller boxes that sit in the wheelhouse and will put the wheel central. Tried to make an IP but failed. Will have another go later. As an ocean going boat, odd that there is no compass, GPS, radar, radio....I might see what I can find.
The deck in there is getting planked and not painted as the plans suggest.

Spent a bit of time dry fitting the sub deck onto which the planks are laid. Here is sort of where the bits go.

Coming together very nicely. It is a shame that the wheelhouse is lacking detail but I'm sure you'll be able to 'enhance' it.
