There is an ornamental pond in the local park which is easy to get to, banks wise, a lot of 'fire ponds' around that are normally over run with Lilies and duckweed dotted around. Failing that there is always the harbour basin. lol
Well I purchased a few more 'bits'. Buying lanterns over the net is hard. In the shop, where you have the option to look at it and get a better idea of the size, it is much easier.
The main reason for the visit though was to get some new dowel to make the booms and masts and some goose-neck's to hang the booms in
The kit did have some material in the set to make masts. Walnut. The grain of which is very easy to split and is actually quite a soft wood when it comes to sanding. One of the masts split while trying to plane a taper, taking a rather large chunk of wood away. One of the booms actually snapped in two while sanding it. Not a happy bunny.
I also needed a solution for the rudder to servo connection. Went for a Bendy wire in a sleeve, a bit like a brake cable on a bike, just thinner. More on that later.
Between naps, (still feeling pretty crock) I got the masts, booms and the spar sorted. They are also a but more robust.
Ta daaaaa! I had to open the hole through the deck out a bit. The original was 8mm, the new ones are 10mm. scale wise a bit thick maybe but look more in proportion.
A pair of nice brass goosenecks now hold the boom's to the masts. The look a lot better than the bit of photoetch that came in the set.
Described as a beginer kit, I think a good few will be put off by a set like this. Most of the stuff needed is in the kit, but a lot of it is not quite what I would call 'authentic looking' like the navigation lights and the cabin vents just being a bit of painted wood. Both are being replaced! I found some deck vents in the spares box that will look a lot better...
More later. (when I have had a nap lol).
Well having spent the last day and a half whittling masts down to shape, I took a deep breath and started to drill holes in them...
Cross braces, yards I suppose now in. These would have held the mast in tension athwartships.
They are a bit hard to find but there are two per mast roughly in line with the books to the left and just below the Airfix logo on the TSR2 lol.
Have made some lantern shields that prevent the red/green Navigation lamps shining the wrong way.
All the junk on deck is sort of where they will be once we get that far. I just wanted to see how I was doing...
Winch spools and Mast foot on the aft mast. Need to check clearance around the wheel deck for some edging.
Been wondering how I'm going to tackle the deck planking. All those annoying posts sticking up all around the main deck need to stay... ? so need sanding decking and sanding around. Grr.
Cheers for looking in and I hope you are enjoying this as much as I am.
Ian,
I certainly am enjoying following you along, beginning to look the ? ? knees. Reading through, I thought what on earth are goose necks??? But of course you kindly gave me a lovely close up ☺.
Rather quiet in here. I better make some noise.
The deck's 'subfloor' Is now clamped and glue drying. I have given all the frames a good coat of a sealer...but not the contact edges, I want the glue to work.
This is the sealer I am using. Serious sticky stuff. First coat thinned with a nitro thinner, the subsequent coats only a little thinner. It dries into the wood and makes it rock hard. In DK they use it as a good alternative to epoxy resin in/on model boats. A quick sand and then some varnish can go down on the mahogany bits and some white on the bits to be painted.
It dries pretty flat with a slight sheen.
The roof areas will be white as will the inside of the 'cock-pit' and the inside of the cabin. I might even remember to put the windows in. lol.
Right now I am making a gang plank which, at the moment, is just a pile of tiny bits of veneer.
Soon time to plank something.... Maybe the deck maybe the sides...
Cheers chaps.
After a trip to the shopping center and a cuppa I got the landing plank built.
planks are 0.5mm x 20mm x3mm the side beams 1mm x85mm the innermost 2mm and the outer ones 3mm high so the planks sit down in it. Just need a rope handrail, that will be after finishes are done.
Cheers
After a bit of a think I concluded that the deck needs to be done before the hull sides... Otherwise it'll be real fun to sand the decks. lol
After the initial start up doubts and fears, only one way forward. get on with it! I ended up going for the kits odd planking.
Looks a bit iffy in this shot. Between the posts will be planked at the end of the deck planking and I can use the odd bits and short lengths to fill the gaps.
The rather odd planking is Lime; the light coloured 3x1mm planks and Walnut; the very narrow, brown 1x1 mm strips.
Did I mention it is a pain in the bum to do? No? well it is!
Now its nap time lol.
