Sd Kfz 250/3 airfix 1/32

[Alan 45]

This is airfix rommel's half track 'Tobruk ' 1942 this was delivered to North Africa in it's standard tank grey and was painted in the field hence the scruffy look .

On the kit , at first I thought a couple of the sprues were new tool but on closer inspection they are old tool and she went together perfectly and was a real joy to build

Only down side is the tracks they are awful look and even painted they look naff and I would recommend anyone wanting to do this kit get the aftermarket tracks if you can

Hi Alan,

nice build, an oldie but goody and you made a super model of it like the camo. With the track they turned out good I think.

but it looks if the tracks don't touch the topsides of the wheels is it?

Cheers Richie glad you like it , your right about the tracks , I might pop a bit of SG on the top of the wheels and see if that solves the problem

Hi Alan,

I use (not always only if SG not works with the vinyl tracks) a 0,2mm wire put it from the top of the track behind the wheels thru the bottom of the track and made a knot in it.

Now that I like mate, the slap-hazard look is a treat, a real in the field paint job. The cheapo chipping technique has worked really well and although the tracks look a bit like they have come off a poundshop crane the painting does look good. Nice one mate, good build. Now for the 'Porky' Rommel. "Schnell to ze Camel burger joint!"

Thanks monica glad you like it , your right about how they painted these things also i foundvout that these were never washed they were scraped with wire brushes because water was too precious to spare , it just goes to show how well these things were made to put up with the punishment of the desert and still keep going

Hi Alan, yet another cracker love German half tracks anyway as you might have guessed but the paint on this is cool niiiicccceeee chipping effect can't wait to see the dio.

Cheers Scott pleased you like it , when I started doing the chipping I thought I was getting carried away with it but after seeing the decals on it I thought maybe I've got it just right so I'm pleased with it and I've started the have and so far I'm pleased with that

Nice work Alan, it has an authentic used and weary look without being weathered-to-heck. I wonder why Airfix chose 1/32 for their armour instead of the standard 1/35?

I think it goes way back to when airfix really made models to be honest , I can go back to the early 70s and getting toy soldiers they were all 1/32 scale so I suppose they went for that scale to fit the toy soldiers range , I don't remember any other large scale from when I was a kid

Today though 1/35 is the norm
