Are they chips or an experimental camo pattern?

They certainly look like hefty chips to me, the front of cab looked fairly standard camo ( couldn't stop to get front shot ) but I can't be sure!

It would look pretty effective (in the right enviroment) if not intentional. It might catch on

It’s paint that’s flaking off because (I suspect — where is @Paintguy when you need him? Oh yeah …) the vehicle wasn’t cleaned well enough before its new coat was sprayed. Either that, or there is an incompatibility in the paints that causes the outer layers to flake off. If you look closely, you can see that the vehicle was a greyish green, and a greener green and then the sand were sprayed over it. Both of the latter are flaking off, but the sand worse than the green.

Could it be that it has been painted with that temporary paint..?

I think it's more simplistic than that - 'The crew are lazy little scrotes and I'd have had their guts for garters ---' (That's what my ex-Tanky Sergeant-Major mate just said!) Definitely not my former approach ......!
