All my washes are vigorously applied, doesn't seem to hurt an enamel painted surface, but i guess with the tracks being unpainted to begin with its given it a shine. Maybe pigments will help, but then you have the problem of touching the tracks and getting pigment everywhere Lordly why is to so difficult :P


Next model i do i will be using the airgun because with this hot weather and crappy paints things need two coats so two very light coats from the airgun should be better than 2 brush coats. If it works out really well i think a more diluted version could be used on tracks. Not thick enough to flake off once the tracks are bent but enough to cover the plastic. Fingers crossed anyway.

I think that's why it's gone sticky Jason.......... Oil (Mainly turps) washes are quite invasive and should really be used over acrylic paints ........ Even then, sparingly as they will eat into the plastic. I had a chassis come apart once because I was a bit over zealous with the wash........ I'm not sure what would be best to use now over the wash........ But I'm sure someone on here will help........... I'd certainly let it dry and not do anything with it until someone else "pipes up".

Knocks the shine right off, just set them, paint them {steel} wash them {rusty brown} dry brush {Steel} let dry , then a coat of this stuff and you're done

Always spray my tracks matt black then use Mig Ammo track colour on them and then dry brush some wear on them.

All the bits for the tracks are now off the sprues and cleaned up ......... Tomorrow I'll start putting them together.


So after three evenings work, I have a couple of takeaway containers full of link parts.........


The parts on the left are in pairs on a central sprue. They are easier to handle while fitting them to the links then they just snip off, and you use the other end, then snip that off............ The rubber bits in the middle are the outer joining links. They stay on the sprues in "fives" and are fed into the jig that way, and are trimmed off afterwards.


I still haven't decided if the rubber pads are going on or not ............. Depends whether I finish it as a "parade" or "combat" tank.

Would I be correct in assuming that a "Parade Tank" would have them on ............ and a combat tank would go with the plain metal tracks? ........... Or are there variations on that ???

Most american tanks like the abrams have there rubber pads on regardless, not sure about russian tho :\

There is a set of parade tracks available, not sure it is by Trumpeter or one of the new Asian companies.

Thanks Steve ....... I think, after doing a bit more research. I'm going to build this "In Anger". I just ordered up the July 2013 back order of MMI, there is a set of "Tactical Decals" for this kit with it........ So i think it might well get some weathering after all.

Welcome back to the 'dark side'

I made a start on putting these together......... It's a bit fiddly but I think I have the measure of it. Fitting the side joiners took a bit of working out . The destructions shows putting 5 on a sprue into the jig then trimming them off before fitting.......... I found it easier to cut the little buggers off the sprue and load 5 into the jig with tweezers..... takes a little longer but is easier........ Anyway here are the first couple of sections done.


They look grey in the photo....... But that is th dodgy lighting. They are definitely black.
