    1/35 Tamiya Chieftain...bargain basement build.

I managed to get a 1/35 Tamiya Chieftain today for the pricey sum of £1.99. It is part started but nothing major. Now here comes the bargain basement part...not just the price but the build. With 99% of my modelling tools and equipment stored away awaiting the arrival of a new mancave-in the shape of a large shed, 15th May, hopefully-AB etc is out as is a lot of paints etc...so what to do? Sit and wait? Er...no, my modelling itchy fingers started to tingle and I thought if bits are missing so be it...have some fun.

So, the plan is a restoration tank-like those programs on the TV. This a Mk5 which is a uprated Mk3/3 and built in the 70's-final builds up to 79 IRC. So would be getting on for 40 years old-ish.

Materials used: Model kit (obviously) Matt black, matt tan, olive drab, Tamiya colour for rear lights, red oxide, light grey primer, glue, snips, sanding stick, brush, rust pigments. And that's it...no camo, no masking as I cannot get to anything.

Here is the start, not attached as other parts to add etc.

Cleaned, red oxide added-salted-grey primer added, salt knocked off via toothbrush. Red oxide showing to show boot and tool wear and external weathering so grey top primer has worn way in places.

    Si

Ta John-yep with limited space and very few materials to work with it actually is more fun. I think the wife is more anxious for it to arrive as she hates the models and equipment taking over the house lol.

SMALL UPDATE-poor light and old eyes stops play.

Painted the running gear in a matt green, also part of the gun barrel. Matt black added to barrel. Have got a second green matt coat to add and then black the tyres-would have been easier if I could get the wheels off... but being a part build they be on too strong and may damage them, so fine brush time...

Only issue is the thermal blanket on the gun barrel...wish it wasn't there...but never mind.

That's coming along well Si - I've always fancied doing a Chieftain in a post-nuclear dio with a ruined London skyline as a backdrop.

                  Cheers

Mate, we are all flawed, and we don't bite around here (I hope) but you are making a brilliant build here. Hope your man cave comes soon

                        UPDATE:

No piccies yet as I have been working outside and the dark grey clouds came, so all packed away in the crammed old shed.

So, what have I done today. With this being a started build it was harder than I thought-the wheels are attached so painting has taken up around 4 hours, many a break due to shaky hands. Tracks have had a coat of steel spray and once dry this will be weathered before attaching. Added the cupola, hatches and hinges and some other parts to the hull and turret. Decided to leave off the filter units-flare launches-railings and some other small details. I want this to look like a restoration, although rust will be used in places.

Issues: The turret segments are fitted wrong, tried to loosen but they start to break...pah! Few gaps-cannot get to my filler so it is going to be hidden with rust and a tarp-hopefully.

This modelling on a budget is hard work lol.

Hopefully will get some more done tomorrow and some piccies.

Nearly forgot, got a basic dio board to do too.

                          UPDATE:

Well, couldn't leave alone so decided to finish up the wheels, got the skirts on, tracks on all had a mucky wash and started to rust in places. Also started on the dio board while stuff was drying etc.

                          Still more to do.
