Tamiya - 1/35 - KV-1(Type-C)

Hello,

Just started one of the models I've purchased during the Scottish Nationals. The kit will be OOTB apart from the tracks which are the hated rubber crap. Replaced with a bargain Eastern Express tracks from Creative Models for £2.57. Looks like a lot of work and sanding, but as you cans see on the picture, they're much better than the standard rubber ones. Not to mentioned that the kit is from 1972 and tracks were inside bent for all those years.

As I mentioned, I've already started. Have done the worst - wheels and one step on the upper hull:

For such an old kit it's surprisingly detailed and all parts come together well. Of course there is quite a lot of sanding, but is all right when you know that it will fit at least.

Forgot to mentioned that I have a metal barrel from ebay for it as well

Quick update:

Have done most of it to be honest. Quite easy and quick model kit. Just tracks to be done and the back of the turret plus finishing job on turret.

I really like that added barrel. It's even threaded inside!

More update tomorrow. Thanks god for Bank Holidays

Quick update:

Almost finished to be honest. Just need to drill the guns and exhaust at the back plus I need to redo wire ropes as the plastic one included in kit looks.. plastic?

Tracks assembled, but I've noticed that They're different from what I wanted. The box says it's for KV-1S which had the same tracks as early versions of KV-1 including mine. Anyway, I used them as I had no choice (rubber ones bent and terrible). Had to sand drive sprockets to fit the tracks more comfortably and there is the result:

And I have to say, those were by far the worst link tracks I've done so far. I know they were cheap, but please.. 10 links fit good, then next 5 you think it's different set.

Started them around 10am, and finished 10 minutes ago.

Def not recommended..

I was worried when I saw the words Eastern Express - I had their KV-1 (Early) & it's the only kit I've ever given up on!

Still, you've adapted & overcome Bart! Looking good now.

I'm with Scott, it needs a diorama remember this tank is the perfect one for chipped winter camo and mud....many mud :P

Thanks guys. I was thinking about winter camo, but not sure about diorama. I had an idea, but it would be more of a rich base than diorama. One or two trees and muddy enviroment. Will think about it. Never did a winter camo before so I'm scared to try it

Goose: it's hard to make it not clean. Not many parts in this kit

Primer and base done.

Hatches painted white, I think to leave them open. Not sure if the figure included will join the tank. At the moment I won't put it in.

Have "steeled" the wheels as well

About the colour scheme.. I'll pass on winter camo at the moment and will go with:

But in the book I have there are some nice interesting schemes as well. Thought a lot about this captured beast, but then it will be another "german" in my collection.

But if I know how to make my own decals and I wasn't so lazy, I'd go with:

I resumed work after a day off

The chippings and scratches first.

Didn't go for a hairspray technique this time. I decided to drybrush it. First with a mixture of couple colours to get the light green colour. Drybrushed around some places and then painted centre of the spots with Tamiya's Dark Iron.

What do you think?
