That's what I do as well and the foil off of well known crisps in a tube. I roughen the surface with scotchbrite or other suitable scourers to both get rid of any residual pattern in the foil and to give a good key for the paint.

I'm glad you told me that as I didn't know about giving it a key, do you have to do that with lead foil aswell

It doesn't hurt I also used old scotchbrite that is worn to key the surface of the plastic prior to painting.
