Another Dio in progress - using up stash.

Hi all,
this is another small dio in progress. Advice please - the face painting was rubbish so I repainted the fleshtone and as yet have to paint the new details in but whilst holding the figure paint has rubbed off even though I had given a good covering of Matt coat. Is there any way of stopping this. Also symbol painted on wall or not, I can't decide.



Any comments/advice welcomed.

Fine work so far Nick and an exciting little diio

I find it's best to mount the figure on a temporary base while painting and work from the top down. Any correcting will almost inevitably affect other areas, so it's just a case of tidying up as you go along. As heads are the most difficult I usually try to paint them separately as well.

I also use temporary bases while painting. I work slightly differently to Peter though. In general I work from inside (Face and skin first) to out (Coats and armour etc) and dark (Shadows) to light (Highlights)....you will develop your own personal technique in time.
The only way to stop paint wearing off while painting is to not handle the figure. This holds true for all elements of modelling. I currently paint mostly gaming figures that will be handled a lot. I therefore give my figures a gloss varnish coat before the finishing Matt coat. Gloss is harder than Matt, so if the Matt wears off the figure will start going shiny before the paint job gets damaged....I can then revarnish rather than repaint!

I'll leave the experts to comment on aspects of figure painting, but as for the figure on the wall, why not? It gives context to the action. Just my opinion

Peter and Tim - many thanks for your comments. I have seen on the site members fastening figures to a stick or bit of sprue. Does this involve drilling and glueing, or how do you fasten to figure please.
Steve - thanks, I think I will leave it on and repaint it trying to get paint drips from the bottom as if it was done in a rush.

Nick, I just use superglue. As it doesn't melt the plastic you can just prise the figure off with a blade.

Forgot to mention - keep the graffiti.

with regard to the symbol, I agree with Steve, gives context and helps tell the story....if you have a look on the net, there are also posters that were pasted around....
Regarding bases, for my gaming figures, it’s easy. They come with a cast base so I superglue that to a suitable coin and use blue tack to hold them on golf tees for painting. Larger figures I would drill the heel of the figure and glue in a wire such as a paper clip, which is then inserted into a wood block for painting. The advantage is that the wire can then be clipped down a bit and used to hold the figure securely on the dio! Good luck with whatever you decide. The vignette is a nice composition by the way.

Your comment about the 'Flag' is spot on.
These symbols were usually done in a hurry and even in the dark, so neatness would not be an issue!
When I model such things, I always let the paint drip and run at the bottom, even get the three colours out of proportion. such little observations help to bring a diorama alive.

So it's good to read you have clocked it already... :thumb2:
