Going down the Rabbit hole, already bought far too much gear!

Only just finished my first little model, but I'm already hooked! Lol....
Started off with few paints, couple of brushes, some glue, pair of tweezers, a cutting knife, etc.
But, have now gone "all in" and been spending like crazy, its a disease, can't stop, Muhahahahah!!!! 8-)

My very small desk, previously used when I worked from home as a work station with laptop, etc, is now getting very crowded with modelling gear!

But I am slowly building up a good collection of modelling gear, have invested in magnifying head goggles, (work ok) and also a magnifying stand with built in light, (also works ok). I now have a small rotating turn table / display table and then bought an adjustable work lamp.
Just bought a paint brush stand, also handy for storing paint pens, clippers, lollipop sticks, cutting knife, etc, as I am starting to have stuff all over the place. I have also pulled the trigger on one of those purpose made model making cabinets/stands where you should be able to store most things, incl paints, glues, etc. (Not delivered yet)

My desk now looks like this, but once the cabinet/stand arrives it will look a lot tidier. (Nb, in this photo you can't also see a black storage crate on the floor, with all my "other" bits and bobs!)
I can see its going to get expensive, but thats me all over, I am quite literally "All the gear and no idea" personified.......

You will learn that the only hobbies with more 'gizmos' are golf and fishing ?

Wait til the stashitis kicks in and you start buying kits 4 times as quick as you can build them.......before you know theres so many they are acting as insulation in the loft

Then theres paint.....you buy bottles and bottles of a certain brand cos you like it......then a new brand comes along.....you try it......you like it.....and start buying all the colours in that brand you already have in the first brand.........then another new brand comes long..... ?

    we have all been there

As Paul says "We have all been there". Don't worry about it. My wife knits and sews and she has more fabric and wool than most haberdasheries so the disease is not restricted to modelling.

Lol, yep its not new with me either.
Years ago did it with Golf, all the gear etc.
Then it was squash, think I ended up with about 12 rackets at one point!
Then it was fishing, firstly course, then fly.
Then it was cycling, then it was motorbikes.
Lately its been shooting (airguns, garden plinking, range shooting and target shooting, Bench Rest, etc)
All my life its been tools, lots of tools.....
And now its model making......we all need a hobby...... 8-)

Oh Peter! You've barely started. There's a HUGE list of stuff to get yet:

        Cutting mat
        Cocktail sticks
I see you have some cotton buds. Get more!
        Barbecue skewers
Assorted clamps (those plastic clothes pegs with rubber tips are indispensible)
        Files (plain steel and diamond)
        Sanding sticks
CA glue (thick and thin) and acetone to clean up spillages etc.
        PVA glue
PE bending tool and a hard flat surface to cut pieces from the fret (a ceramic tile works well)
        Tweezers
Microdrills and pin vice (you won't believe how useful they are)
Razor saws (The Czech ones with wooden handles are MUCH better than those with plastic handles)
And is that Tamiya Fast Extra Thin the only cement you have?
        Blu-tac
Lots of little storage boxes - the plastic ones with lids from your local Chinese takeaway are excellent
Lots of medium size storage boxes with lids that fasten ( ask me why flimsy ice cream tubs with clip-on lids are no good)
The guys have already mentioned paints, but don't forget the varnishes and washes to go with them
Assorted small containers with and without lids for mixing/thinning paint or for times when you only need a small quantity (folks use bottle caps, contact lens containers, shot glasses, empty cleaned out paint jars etc. Your ceramic tile works for small drops. Scrape off the dried paint with a razor blade (preferably a single-edge safety blade) to clean it
Is that X-20A the only paint thinner you have?
Gap and seam filling putty (the solvent type for flat gaps and plastic putty for gaps in corners)
        Liquid mask
        Decal solution
Craft knife handles for a range of blades (straight and curved, chisel type for putty application, glue looper) - nothing worse than having to swap blades mid-way through doing something. And spare blades
LOTS of storage shelving for your stash and to display finished kits
OMG - I almost forgot masking tape!
A selection of plastic strip (square and round, solid and tube). You'll need lots of different sizes but the Law says that no matter how many sizes you have, you will NEVER have the exact size you need
Some sheet plastic of different thicknesses - the clear stuff makes good windows

        - and just wait until you experience the joys of airbrushing!

Oh - most important of all - some sort of permission from SWMBO to take over significant portions of your home!

Gern. You forgot to mention the all important Toilet Roll hanging from the wall. Great for drying brushes or blowing noses for us poor guys working in the garge through winter.

Don't have the above items (yet) but I do already have all the other items on your list, not everything was shown in the photo, that's just what's on my desk, but I have a large storage box on the floor with the rest of my current gear. I already have cutting mat/multiple adhesives/paints/thinner/cocktail sticks/clamps, etc, etc.

But if its like any of my other hobbies, the list of gear will just get bigger and bigger...... I can see paint is already an issue, need more!

You have yet to experience the joy that an Airbrush can bring, whole lot more required for that discipline.
The airbrush itself, compressor, spray booth, new paints, cleaning equipment and the list goes on

In photography circles its referred to as GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)
Oh so easy to convince yourself that you need a specific lens for every possible scenario.

These all pale into insignificance if you have the travel bug gene.
Pretty sure I have visited nearly every Tram and Art Deco/Modernist house museum in Europe.
Spent enough just on fridge magnets from the various locations we have visited over the past few years.
Did you know there is an excellent model shop in Aachen ? https://www.huenerbein.de/
They also have a superb Christmas market with the local sweet delicacy Printen
Easy enough journey by Eurostar via Brussels, go on you know you want to.

One vital requirement of the hobby is a good variety of expletives and knowing when to use them. Modelling mishaps are common and range from the mildly irritating to the full on catastrophy. A slight wobble when brush painting may only require a mild "Oh s**t" whereas an almost full bottle of Tamiya Extra Thin flowing over you latest, almost complete, masterpiece and off the bench onto your trousers and the floor will certainly need something much stronger and louder. A well disciplined modeller will have a large swear box which will raise enough capital for many kits and much equipment.

Scale Model Shop has had a bit more business from me over the last two weeks or so!!!!
Also ordered two books from the US on weathering, not arrived yet.
Nice model making/paint stand cabinet now arrived today, so will get it on my desk asap, just as soon as the last coat of paint is dry, currently on coat number 3. Bloody MDF, so it will take lots of coats of paint as that stuff soaks up paint like a sponge!
Then also got a new task light, now I can see what I'm doing! Yah!
......still need more paint though.... ?

I found that even after acquiring what I think is a fair set of tools and bobs and bobs. I can’t look at things and wondering, ‘can I use that for!’. Then there is this place! I read a build and think, 'what a good idea’ for example, i think it was Scottie, he used some sweet wrappers to simulate worn leather seats!! So - a trip to Sainsburys, returned with a packet of Reisen chocs. Ate the sweets kept the wrappers. SWMBO was throwing out our old scales, well tried too. I hung onto the weights - well you never know when you’ll need one!!!!

I’ve only been doing this for 18 months or so and I now have drawers full of ‘stuff’ I think may be useful. Sponge, wire, plastic tubing, clamps, clothes pegs, wedges of wood. Now I can’t throw anything away without having a good hard think about alternate uses!!!
