The only major 'cons' are that using regular inkjet or laser printers the only way you can achieve white is by using white decal paper and then some careful trimming of the decal. Light colours can also be tricky, being a bit translucent.
A minor inconvenience is the need to seal the printed decals if you use an inkjet printer.
Nonetheless printing your own can be very useful at times.

An alternative to Ink jet, are laser printers which are now at a more real price level. However there are some risks with these as well as benifits
The colour is more solid, being a plastic type powder that is melted onto the paper. The bad news is that you have to know that the temperatur of the roller in your laser printer is often higher than the decal film for laser printers can manage. resulting is a buggered print head and roller. Always check the opperating temp of the printer and the max temp of the decal paper.
There was a bit of gosip a while ago that one of the big guns was going to make a laser printer with a head that could do white.... Still waiting on that. Now that the ALPS printers are pretty much a thing of the past, maybe it will turn up one day.
