starting in wood

I'm not sure if this is the right place?
Anyway, eventually I want to make something big in wood from Nelson's navy, (I've just finished Patrick O'Briens 'aubrey' series, and want a model to suit) but need a simpler start, to guage the space, tools and skills needed. I would like to end up with something decent tho, maybe a small brig or cutter? So can anyone give me pointers where to start, what to look for, makes to aim at etc?

theres plenty of wooden ship kit manufacturers out there but they are expensive

funny enough i keep thinking about starting this in my stash, even though floaty boaty things arnt my thing
