First Model on its way

Well after a bit of hesitation I finally bit the bullet on a Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire MK1 on the recommendation of John at SMS. My and possibly everyone's favourite plane. Order will be with me next week

Load of paints and other bits and pieces to make sure I have everything to hand. The JU88 will be next although I still have a hankering for a 1/350 warship. I shall see. All in all £108 spent but I am starting from scratch. I have loads of small tools and tweezers as an ex electronics/electrical engineer. I will be patient and take each step at a time. I am particularly interested in the weathring etc which is something I've never done as a teenager. In those days it was rip the box open, splash glue everywhere and paing with a roller. At least that what my memory tells me but I always enjoyed it and for me the kick was the actual build so having to think about paint effects is new.

Good for you. Great choice of kit. As you say just take it steady and above all "have fun".

Every British person’s favourite plane, I think I’ve always had a liking for A-4 Skyhawks myself, but I couldn’t tell you why.

My advice: don’t try to copy the great models you see online on your first attempt, or it will end in disappointment

Have to admit in terms of single seat fighter the FW190 is a close second. I also like WW1 fighters but I'll wait till I get practised before tackling those as they can be very fiddly. I will try and keep a low expectation so as not to try and emulate the highly professional planes I see online Jakko. Easy trap to fall into

Wood-and-canvas biplanes are a lot more work than metal monoplanes, definitely. Better get some experience under your belt with Spitfires, Fw 190s, and whatever else interests you from that period and beyond before trying to do a First World War biplane justice. Unless, of course, you want to build one by following this brilliant (if I say so myself) example

I remember Jakko's build for the starter kit GB. I think he only had two paints and a brush with bristles at each end.
The end result was better that expected.

I lost my modelling virginity to a 1/48 Spitfire too, but the Revell version. I've learnt a whole lot since then but it was a great way into the hobby for me.

WW1 is more of a deep seated passion going back tob reading Biggles books in the 60's. I still do incidently. Are simpler times.
But yes WW1 builds will be a considered choice and the complexity of the more sophiticated plastic models will be an incentive. But I do need to get warmed up first I think

I built dozens of the old Airfix models in the 60's. Terribly if I remember but enjoyed it a lot. Learnt how glue on clear plastic is a bad idea and paint laid down like egg mixture does not end well. But the Spitfire was always by go to plane so as a starter for 10 I'm looking forward to this. John was very helpful as you suggested so I bought everything from him.

I love ships. The 1/350 are just the right size with lots of parts, lots of small guns and lifeboats and I want that to spend time making it. And thats the attraction and reason for getting into it again. Watch this space

Decision will be HMS ships or German or Japanese battleships/cruisers. I did the Hood and George many years ago but the modern kits are quite superb although the Japanese ships look interesting. I shall spend a bit of time looking

The wonderful Spitfire has got to be the most beautiful plane. Just the sound of a merlin makes my hairs on my neck stand up!! Glorious :thumb2:

I too like ships, I have 3 1/350 battleships Tamiya Bismarck and Yamato plus Trumpeters beautifull Roma. Just have not found the courage to give one a go!
