The Hunters and the Hunted' - kits and reference material

    Hi all

So you will have noticed that there have been some recent arrivals outside of my usual wargaming quickbuild kits and scenery efforts.

This came about because I have decided to branch out after buying a Messerschmitt Bf110 night fighter towards the end of last year. I recently thought it would be nice to have a British 4-engined bomber to go alongside it and then the idea's kept coming......much to the regret of my bank balance!

The end result is that I'm starting to put together a collection of 1/72 models connected, in some way shape or form, to the British WW2 bomber offensive, with the current working title being as above - 'The Hunters and the Hunted'.

Below are the things I've collected so far, although it will be some time before I start work on any of them. This is partly because I have other things in the stash I want to clear first but primarily because I need some practice on wingy things and have five cheaper kits I can practice on first (I've only built one in the last 30 years).

I've also bought various resources and some extras to help with the process.

All comments and suggestions for other kits welcome.

    All the best!

    Andrew

PS apologies if this is not the right place for the post.....

    Airfix Lancaster B III
It may be an obvious choice as one of the 'Hunted' but it will be my first ever four-engined bomber.

Very obviously a 'Hunter'. The thing that started it off and a lovely looking kit but of course it also came to be 'Hunted' as the war progressed.

I was looking for a 'Hunter' that flew intruder missions or escorted the bomber stream hunting for German night fighters but of course they were also 'Hunted' too. In hindsight not perhaps the best choice. Apparently the squadrons that flew this version did not normally fly those sorts of missions (at least based on my research so far) but I think I have found a way of making it work.

I decided not to limit the collection to aircraft. I could obviously have got for an 88 as there are plenty around at a cheaper price but thought I'd go for something a little different.

Of course this is very much a 'Hunter' and not something you see much of. This is the first resin kit I have ever bought and it also comes with a lot of PE, which I've not worked with much before.

Again obviously a 'Hunter'. It was hard to find a searchlight and was not cheap especially when postage from Romania was added.

Thanks Garry. The 110 is a lovely kit.

As for the space, I'm not sure I do either but i'll cross that bridge when I come to it!!

I like that you chose to do 1/72 scale for the planes. I think the phrase "build it and they will come" springs to mind for space......

Thanks Jim. Although I wonder if I've bitten off more than can I can chew and suspect it might keep me going for a decade or ten!!

              Hi all

So bought this to help with future Mossie research and purchases on this topic. Only cost £9 and although it was sold as seconds it's as good as new apart from a some marks on the cover and crinkling of some pages on the inside - I wonder if it got a bit damp at some point in the past?

Love this idea Andrew. I have my eyes on something similar although different scales. I'm planning on converting a 1/32 Ju88 A4 into a G6 and a 1/32 Bf110 C7 into a G4. The rest of the kits will be 1/48 and 1/35

Will be watching your progress closely

                    Thanks Alan.

I might need to pick your brains at some point, so look out for a PM at some point of that's ok?

                        Hi all

So another book to help with this collection of builds. Between the four Mossie books I have recently acquired I have more than enough material to keep me going.

                          Hi all

So you may remember I got this book for Father's day on the recommendation of our own Alan G, to go alongside this project for references purposes, and so I thought I'd share a little bit of what I've read so far.

So far it's been a combination of background historical information on the formation of these units and recollections of the author about his wartime training and experiences, as well as extracts from units records detailing combat losses and victories on days they were operating. It's format means it's easy to pick up where you leave off and not have to re-read the previous few pages to remind yourself where in the 'story' you've got to but it's not a short book all the same - although I had to have Google maps open to work out where some of the airfields they operated from were located.

And of course, above all, it gives you an insight into the war directly from the German side, which at least in my experience is something of a rare beast.

It's not a cheap book - hardbacks are currently mid-£20s - but if this is a topic you have an interest in I think you'll find it worth the expense.

                            Hi all

So following the arrival of my Airfix Wellington earlier this week (here), it occurred to me that it has been some time since I formally updated this thread, which lists the kits and reference material I have for this project.

Most of these were my purchases or 'suggested' gifts but the Revell Dambuster' kit and book were a 50th birthday present from a mate of mine and completely unsolicited on my part - honestly!!

Anyway, enough waffle.....these have all arrived since July 2020.....

                            My mate's gift....

I didn't have a Mosquito bomber and the Airfix released this....

                            This week's arrival....
