Actually mortar for brickwork should be a holding meduim. It binds the bricks together.
Bricks move with temperature & also water absorbtion so need a holding matter which has a flexibiltiy. Using the incorrect mortar, which may be termed as glue, will result in many cases the brickwork failing with cracking some times considerable & in some cases dangerous. Mortar provides a bed on which the bricks rest & are kept in position. The bricks are self supporting in a restrained position (except when they crack)..
