Are you brush painting or airbrush,I don't use them but sure I heard tamiya doesn't brush very well, good in airbrush, also if your building military then you probably want matt varnish, could use satin on aircraft.if your brush painting and on a budget I would give the revell aqua a try at 2 quid a pot it's not bad stuff and can be thinned with tap water.Comment

I have only ever airbrushed on varnishes so can only say what works best for that method. VMS is my favourite brand but have had good results with others such as Vallejo and Tamiya clear.
I would have thought you could use any of these well known brands via a brush once your acrylic paint has dried.Comment

For one Tamiya isn't really acrylic. I too have only applied varnish with an airbrush which lays a layer of paint over the surface and doesn't disturb the underlying paint as much as painting with a brush. I would let the paint cure for a longer period before painting the varnish with a brush.

Over night drying is fine Richard. I do it all the time on my small lads, using both water based and oil based varnishes. Don’t confuse the poor chap Richard. Tamiya is acrylic (unless it’s the lacquer version). The difference is that It uses an acrylic binder formulated for an alcohol solvent, rather than formulated for water, that’s allComment

Edward, itzed109 Tamiya 'acrylic' is a hybrid, the carrier is primarily spirit based. Whatever you do DON'T try to wash brushes out with water, you'll finish up with quite a mess....and your brushes in the bin.
As Pete stillp says, Winsor & Newton Galeria varnish, available in Gloss, Matt and Satin. Should you have an art shop within a reasonable distance, that would be somewhere else you could buy.
Mark1 Mark, Tamiya brush out great....provided you thin them first. Rule of thumb is start with 60 / 40, thinners (Tamiya X-20) to paint, then adjust to suit.Comment
