    56th FG, 61st FS 'black' P-47s

There has been much debate about the colour of these aircraft, much based on the few, mostly bad, colour photographs available. Despite compelling evidence from surviving pilots and ground crew that the aircraft were "black" or "flat black" all sorts of theories (plum, matched to dinner jackets etc  ) have gained credence.

P-47 researcher and friend Nigel Julian has always believed that they were black and has had a mounting suspicion that they were painted in British 'Night', like the undersides of our bombers. He recently posted a picture of artefacts from one of these P-47s and an RAF Lancaster bomber together. Here is the link, you can draw your own conclusions.

For those of you with an interest in the colour of the 61st FS P-47M's. One of these is a piece from an RAF Lancaster, painted RAF Night. The other is from a 61st FS P-47M. I'll just leave this here a while.

    Cheers

When I made a model of one of these aircraft several years ago I used matt black, next time I'll use Night. I certainly won't be mixing any plum or dinner jacket colours
