German Tank Destroyer Units ( Help)

    Hi chaps

I'm looking at a new build once my Whippet is complete( soon)

I have the Jagdpanzer IV Lang (70) by Tamiya and I'm looking for ref of Units.

So far I have found the 12th SS Panzer had used the Jagdpanzer and with the history I have read but I'm not too comfatable with portraying this AFV as this with the atrocities that this unit caused.

Does anyone else know of any other Units that operated around Russia. ( I did find out that the Jagdpanzer did enter against Russian armour but I couldn't find units that took action.

    Anyone help

    Regards

    Robert

Hi Robert, 18th panzer grenadier division, 1st panzer battalion 118th panzer regiment, April 1945.

10th panzer grenadier division, February 1945.

3rd panzer grenadier division, June 1944

5th panzer battalion had one company of panzerIV L70 .

    Hope this helps.

Robert the 49th Division, 4th Armored Division and 5th Panzer Division on the Eastern Front received Abteilungens of Jagdpanzers IVs. Also the Panzer Lehr Division received 31 Jagdpanzer IVs.

That gives you a few to choose from, although it depends on what unit markings the Tamiya kit provides.

If you go for anything other than a late war example, you'd need to add zimmerit to be truly accurate.

Personally I'd go for the Panzer Lehr, they served all over & for a Jagdpanzer without zimmerit, then the Ardennes or early 1945 in Germany would be perfect.

Sounds good Robert! Just a suggestion, but Masterbox do a "German captives" figure set. It comes with a Russian soldier escorting the prisoners, but if you didn't use him & just has the others, it could look like a beaten foe heading away from the Allied forces?

dubster72, here is something interesting about the pic you posted above. The Russian soldier is carrying a Mosin-Nagant... however, it is a Finnish Mosin-Nagant as evidenced by the front sight. Russian rifles had the globe and post type front sight whereas the Finns had a blade type sight with the protective ears on either side of the blade on the rifles they captured from the Russians and refurbished.

I've got those same figures, they are fantastic and will look great in any scene.

Got this one in advance of the build idea Patrick.

All the ref pics I've sourced ( few in battle formation etc) quite a few of the Jagdpanzer IV Lang seem to be on roadsides destroyed or well should we say abandoned. I'm looking towards the latter version and possibly a roadside kill with destruction all around. Weathering will be key and a few scratch building. May use some Russian soldiers and if I can source maybe a light Russian period jeep. POWS will be looking pretty peed
