Advice on making a surface smooth

I'm building a large USS Enterprise model from scratch. The saucer hull is going to be smooth, but I need advice and making it smooth. What material shall I use. At the moment, I am using caulk, but mixed with water. The effect is good. Ideally, I'd like to put something on that when it drys, it automatically smooths and levels imperfections.

    Any advice?

Assuming there's no lumps and bumps to get in the way, I would treat it like a car. Use a good primer then very fine wet and dry to sand it back.
