Hi all recently i posted a completed project U69 u boat and was aske by Dubstar if i coul do a thread describing the painting step for that project so here they are as requested
prime the entire kit, in my case i used humbrol grey primer from a spray can.
Spray the hull (not the deck or coning tower) using Tamiya (TS4) german grey, spray both above and below the waterline at this stage.
Once this is dry using Tamiya XF63 german grey spray on randome streaks using the standard colour, then mix XF63 with white and then black and apply more randome streaks to the hull.
Apply a gloss coat over the entire hull, i used two coats of johnsons clear but any gloss will do. This allows a smooth finish to make it easy to remove the maskol which is the next stage.
Stipple Maskol randomly over the hull add more below the waterline than above.
Take Tamiya XF77 and spray more randome streaks over the entire hull.... then again mix this with white and then black and apply more streaking randomly over the whole hull.
Once this is dry use masking tape to remove the maskol below the waterline only, this replicates paint flakeing.
Mist a few coats of XF63 over the hull to even out the colours and tone down the contrast.
The lower hull is now complete, mask off everything below the waterline.
Airbrush shade of XF66 randomly over the upper hull, then when dry apply maskol.
The dark grey camouflage bands are a mix of XF 24 and XF8 these are on the mid section of the upper hull.
Now remove the maskol with masking tape to create paint flakeing, Mist a coat of XF66 over this to blend the colours.
Apply filter coats of mig P400 and P240 to add depth to the colours then remove the lower hull masks.
apply a gloss coat again i used johnson clear then apply your decals.
I started weathering first by applying X19 into the reccesses, then i added the grunge line by mixing X25, X23 X26 and XF79. This is sprayed in light layers along the waterline and upper saddle tanks. Once dry stipple a thick wash of XF66 along the waterline to replicate salt stains using a card wrapped in cellotape as a straight edge.
sparingly add rust streaks by using burnt scienna oil paint thinned.
Once dry add raw umber washes, to simulate paint flakeing and salt stains i used an HB number 2 and light grey crayon. Finally below the flood holes i mixed white and light grey artists pastels and brushed this on.
Seal everything with vallajo flat varnish. The conning tower was painted as above using a base coat of XF66 including the interior, the weathering was lighter than the hull but added more rust due to the conning tower being opened to air more than the rest of the boat.
The deck was painted first using raw umber oil paint and the surlpus was taken off using cotton buds then allowed to dry, then with a brush, painted on XF69 nato black and before it is dry appy thinner to the nato black and brush it oner the deck allowing some of the brown to show through.
